Now the French demand that every sign and leaflet at the LONDON Olympic games be in their tongue too
By Emma Reynolds  17 March 2012

This summer's Olympics will take place in London, presided over by British celebrities and politicians and paid for by the nation's taxpayers.

But a determined group of Francophones are insisting that every sign, announcement and leaflet at the landmark event should be published in French.

The Gallic activists believe their language should be placed on an equal footing with English at the Games.

Their claim is based on the fact that the Olympic Charter of 1908 states that the 'official languages of the International Olympic Committee are French and English.'

The London Organising Committee have tried in vain to plead that English is now a universal tongue, according to The Times.

LOCOG is now locked in a battle of wills with the International Organisation of la Francophonie, represented by Michaelle Jean, a former Governor General of Canada.

Just ignore them, like the rest of the world does.

Agreed.

Her Excellency is confused with another country who puts up with the duel language BS.

Hint:  The UK is not the country.

Belgium? ;D

I'm surprised that this is even an issue in Great Briton. I'm all so surprised no one has told them to "Sod off" yet either!

The Brits should respond in a way that the French will understand.

sur votre vélo

;D

Unfreakingbelieveable.

So, as I drive from home in Montreal back to work in Kingston this evening, this drivel is what I have to look forward to listening to on the radio because, you just know, any manufactured french/english controversy is top of the news around here. Yay me.

Sigh.

Signs that would be nice to see posted around France . . .  "That is the German Army you see, marching west and you are on your own this time, cheerio".

"We feel we ought to use English in our country.  After all, we were instrumental in ensuring that you didn't have to speak German in yours..."  :piper:

Here's a way to do things - have the programs and signs like they have instructions sheets.  A Union Jack with things written in English beside it, et les lignes francaises a cote d'un petit grenouille vert...problem solved.

Go into a drivers license office in Glasgow.  Only speak Welsh.  When they look at you as if they want to punch you in the mouth, ask to speak to their supervisor.  When (if) you get to speak with with their supervisor, complain that your linguistic rights are being infringed upon by not having the equal opportunity to speak Welsh, something you feel is your God given right. Refuse to leave until served in Welsh.

Repeat the same drill in Manchester.

Post back here how you make out.
