Seeing how we have a lot of people travelling all over Canada, I thought you might want to direct travellers from Milnet.ca to your favourite eating establishments.
My Community- Dartmouth
1) The Palladium- good food, family owned. The baklava is to die for.
2) Vines- better if you have your better half, the food is I feel the best in the HRM.
3) Big leagues- best wings in town IMO.

Mama Alfa's - Italian cooking like an Italian mother's (and I grew up with one, so I know);  hand-made pasta to order (24-36 hrs notice)

Armando's - Neopolitan owner who sings on occasion; veal shank that falls off the bone

For lunch, nothing like dropping by one of the Italian delis in town (Maltese Grocery in the north side behind the Armoury on Park Avenue, Agostino's and Fresco's on the south side), grabbing a bun from the rack (at Agostino's, baked on site), bringing it to the deli counter, and having them make a sandwich for you - to order or tell them if you like hot or mild lunch meats and let them do the picking

Thunder Bay On: Agree with the Maltese Grocery. I also use to bring back to Winnipeg their double loin pork chops stuffed with home made Italian hot sausage. Great on the barbecue

Winnipeg MB: VJ's on Main Street in Wpg, across from the old CNR station. Best fries and hamburgers in Wpg.
                    Sunday Brunch at The Fort Garry. Pricey, but unforgettable.

Westbank, BC: The Aegean Grill On Hwy 97/Main St. Get their early for their roast lamb and potatoes. Husband and wife owners.

San Antonio TX: Los Cucos (Mexican), Texas Longhorn Cafe (burgers and fries), Julians (Pizza), Tip Top Cafe (Texas Barbecue). A young lady from Wpg works at
                        Julians. Her Dad at Brooks AFB. Tip Top Cafe was featured on Dinners, Drive Inns and Dives.

Jack Astor's in Ancaster and Hamilton, The worlds BEST pan bread with cheeze period. The peppercorn pasta is awesome as is thier peppercorn steak

If you find yourself in Peterborough, Ontario for any length of time, I highly recommend La Hacienda for real Mexican food - not the stuff that's usually sold as "Mexican", but real home cooking.  Also Cosmic Charlie's and Karma's Cafe for good fusion food.  The Olde Stone for beer made downstairs, and St. Veronus for good stuff from far away.

Right now I live in Oshawa, ON, and I miss the myriad of good restaurants I enjoyed in Peterborough.

And in Halifax, at least one brunch at Jane's on the Common (NW corner of Robie and Cunard) is definitely worth it!

Jane's?  Never heard of that one...have to try that out!

Halifax?  Well here are some of my fav's.

Italian - il Mercato on Spring Garden is pretty nice.  Kinda pricey but the food very good and the atmosphere was excellent.  The website pic's are very bright but they tone the lighting down alot around supper time.

Thai - Baan Thai.  Great food there.  Good prices too.  Lots of curry if you want it!

Breakfast - there is a place I think is called the Armview Restaurant that overlooks the rotary that had a great breakfast, and their brushetta was really good too (been there for breakfast before a day on the hike and went back once for supper and had some scallop something or other, I'd go back).  Nice little diner.

Seafood - the best I've had aside from making it at home is the Five Fishermen, but if you are on per diem, you will likely spend it all there, and then some but the food was fantastic.  If that is too pricey, there are several other places less $ all within walking distance.  I had a maple-glazed salmon dish that was awesome.

Fish and Chips - I'd have to go with Wharf Wraps at Fisherman's Cove, Eastern Passage.  2nd place would go to John's Lunch on Pleasant Street.  John's Lunch is very popular for its fish and chips and deep fried clams but...they will clog you arteries eventually.   ;D

Buffet - if anyone likes buffett style dining, I was at the one at the Casino this summer past and it was pretty good.  

Now I can't remember the name of it, but there is a little place down off Queen, past Alexandria's that used to make the best wraps in the city.  I can't remember the name of the place...down Queen past Alexandria's, just before you go down the little hill, turn right and its the first place on the left.  Good food there and good prices.

I'd have to mention Kel's Deli on Wyse Road, Dartmouth too, best steamed Montreal smoked meat sandwich I've been able to find in the city.  They make it right in front of your eyes.

And the best Reuben sandwich in the city used to be at the Apple Barrel...I am not even sure what is there now.


If you are ever in Charlottetown PEI and looking for a really good diner type meal, look up Maid Merrian's (spelling?).  We always used to go there when we were on SAVs in Charlottetown, they had the best coconut cream pie on the island IMO.  And the menu wasn't typical diner food, it was more like home cooked meals, boiled dinner, pork chops, mashed PEI spuds, stuff like that.

I'll second that! We went to PEI in the summer of '07 and ate at Maid Marion's. Great food, great service.


I didn't see Economy Shoe Shop on the list for Halifax. That one is my fave thus far, but haven't been to some of the others mentioned.

Winnipeg - I'd have to add Kelekis on North Main (incredible fries!!!), Alycia's on Cathedral (perogies!!!) and The Bridge Drive Inn (BDI) on Jubilee has the best ice cream in the world.  And Jeannie's Bakery - gotta have a Jeannie cake for your birthday if you grow up in the 'Peg.

It's not a cheap joint - but the food is excellent - it's completely worth it in my view - but I love good food.  And they serve booze at 10am.

I'm often in North Bay visiting friends at Nipp. We usually go out and get hammered, in the mornings there is nothing we want more then breakfest at Burger World. I haven't been for lunch, but I can tell you the breakfest is awesome and cheap. The servers there often have a good eye for hung over university kids and throw a pitcher of water on the table without you having to ask. Now that's service.
