Shooting rampage at Fort Hood

I'm confused. She needs a new knee. Fine. And she says that new knee will likely wear out quicker if she's carrying all her cop gear. Wouldn't she then... get another new knee? I mean, I may be grossly mistaken, but I was under the impression that police officers in the States tended to have rather robust health insurance coverage, especially with regard to those injuries that are sustained on the job.

Whether she's eligble for a second new knee or not....have you any clue how they install a new joint?

the receiving bones are drilled out just undersized and the end of the joint is literally hammered into the bone itself for a tight fit.....wanna go through that a second time?

...not to mention, the same joint may only be replaced twice or so due to the evasiveness of the procedure.

Pentagon officials may have overlooked a serious threat against members of the military by a fellow soldier before the Fort Hood shooting rampage. Army Specialist Marc A. Hall has been in pretrial confinement since Dec. 17 for writing a rap song in which he talks about plans to shoot and kill fellow soldiers in his unit. Hall allegedly sent a package to the Pentagon in July that contained a CD with threatening rap lyrics for a song called “Stop Lossed,” says Kevin Larson, spokesperson for Fort Stewart, the Georgia military base where Hall was stationed.

“There are express threats that are contained within that song,” Larson says. “Even though no names are mentioned in the song lyrics, it’s very easy to identify who Hall is talking about because of the positions they hold.” Hall allegedly followed up the threats contained in the song lyrics with similar verbal threats made to multiple soldiers in his unit, Larson adds.

No one knows exactly what happened to the CD immediately after it was received by the Pentagon, Larson says. But Pentagon officials sent the disk to Hall’s military unit in September after holding onto it for several months. Hall wasn’t confronted about the rap until a few months later, after the shooting on the Fort Hood military base.

Five charges have been filed against Hall under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, a catchall military-law provision that allows soldiers to be charged for conduct that brings discredit to the armed forces. Two of the charges involve threatening violence against fellow soldiers and threatening to shoot commanders. The remaining charges include wrongfully communicating to go on a rampage, wrongfully communicating to hurt someone if deployed, and distributing a song as the communication of a threat.

At least they're taking this one seriously.

Fort Hood shooting suspect moved to jail: U.S. military

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army psychiatrist charged in the Fort Hood shooting rampage has been transferred from a hospital to a local jail, the military said on Friday.

"Major Nidal Hasan was released from Brooke Army Medical Center and transported to the Bell County Jail overnight," said an army statement.

A little bit more from the "hometown" paper in San Antonio:
Accused Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was moved early Friday morning from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio to the Bell County Jail.

His lawyer, John Galligan, said Hasan -- who is paralyzed -- was moved to the jail in Belton, 15 miles from Fort Hood, about 2 a.m. by air transport.

"He was moved without any notification to me," Galligan said. "His brother tried to visit him this morning, and was denied entry into the hospital."

Galligan said other relatives had made plans to fly to San Antonio to see him and must now change them on short notice.

Fort Hood, which doesn't have its own jail, negotiated a $207,000 contract with Bell County in March to house Hasan for at least the next six months.

Hasan had been at BAMC since Nov. 6, a day after the Army said he opened fire on fellow troops and others. Hasan opposed his deployment to Afghanistan to "kill fellow Muslims", and was shot by police responding to the shootings.

He is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 specifications of attempted premeditated murder. He faces an Article 32 hearing, similar to a grand jury proceeding, sometime this summer or fall.

In a statement, the Army confirmed Hasan was released from Brooke Army Medical Center and transported to the Bell County Jail overnight.

His unit, the 21st Combat Aviation Brigade, provided the air assets to move Hasan to his pretrial confinement facility, the statement said.

Hasan is now a pretrial confinee in the Bell County Jail and all further questions should be addressed to the Bell County public information officer or Sheriff Dan Smith, the statement said
.

And from a local TV station:
BELTON (April 09, 2010)-After a week of anticipation, suspected Fort Hood gunman, Army Maj. Nidal M. Hasan is officially a resident of the Bell County Jail.

Defense attorney John Galligan told News 10 that Hasan arrived at the Bell County Jail around 4 a.m. Friday.

"His unit, the 21st Combat Aviation Brigade, provided the air assets to move Hasan to his pretrial confinement facility," Fort Hood officials said in a press release Friday morning.

Galligan says Hasan's brother saw him in San Antonio at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and was given no notice that Hasan was going to be moved.

Galligan did not know Hasan had been moved until Friday morning.

The Bell County Sheriff's Office has scheduled an afternoon press conference Friday release more details on Hasan's overnight transfer.

Hasan faces thirteen counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in connection to the Nov. 5 shooting rampage at Fort Hood.

Officials early Friday morning listed Hasan on the the Bell County Jail log.

According to the log, Hasan was booked into the jail on “Offense Unknown” charges through Fort Hood.

Galligan said last week the army contracted with Bell County to hold Hasan for 183 days, beginning on March 31.

The contract was expected to cost taxpayers more than $200,000, paid to Bell County out of the Army coffers.

Hasan was paralyzed from the chest down after civilian police shot him to stop the Nov. 5 rampage.

He was given a discharge physical on March 31 but remained at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio until late Thursday.

Hasan's Article 32 hearing - the equivalent of a civilian preliminary hearing - is scheduled for as early as July 1.

Pity  ::)

Does this lawyer suppose there were some changes to the family plans of Lt. Col. Warman, Maj Caraveo, Capt Gaffaney, Capt Seager, CWO (ret'd) Cahill, SSgt DeCrow, Sgt Krueger, SPCs Greene, Hunt and Xiong, PFCs Nemelka and Pearson, and Pvt Velez?

The convening authority is the I Corps CG at Ft Hood,so thats where the trial is unless there is a change in venue. A prisoner usually doesnt know he is being moved prior to movement for security reasons. That is the case in the civie law enforcement world as well. A committed islamist like Major Hasan would be expected to plead guilty and eagerly await his date with the 72 virgins. I think Hasan will try to save his worthless life by going to trial. Oh well.

Army will seek death in Fort Hood case

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Military prosecutors sent a notice Wednesday indicating they plan to seek the death penalty against the Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood, a defense attorney said.

Maj. Nadal Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the Nov. 5 shooting. Premeditated murder carries the death penalty. But if military jurors convict Hasan, they can only sentence him to death if they determine there is an aggravating factor in the case, according to military law.

Defense attorney John Galligan said the notice he received from prosecutors outlines as an aggravating factor that more than one person was killed in the same incident.

“They’ve done everything except tell me to my face that they plan to seek the death penalty,” Galligan told The Associated Press from his office near Fort Hood, about 130 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

RADICAL Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi urged all Muslims serving in the US army to follow the example of Major Nidal Hasan who stands accused of killing 13 comrades, in an internet video posted last night.

"What Nidal Hasan did was heroic... and I call on all Muslims serving in the US army to follow his path," Awlaqi said in a video posted by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) on jihadist websites, the US monitoring group SITE reported.

"Nidal Hasan is one of my students and I am honoured by that," he said in the video, whose authenticity could not immediately be verified.

Hasan, a US army psychiatrist, is accused of opening fire in November on colleagues at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 13 people in what Awlaqi described as "wonderful" action.

Hasan, who is of Palestinian origin, was "defending his nation" and killed American soldiers on their way to Afghanistan and Iraq, the cleric said.

Another home grown terrorist.  The Yanks are looking for him and one day I am sure will catch up with him too.

There is nothing particularly anti-Muslim that could be said about this by someone who may feel they are the enemy.

There is a whole lot of crime in North America, and if X percent of the population is Muslim, it would follow that X percent of the crimes are committed by Muslims (but I would be willing to bet that they're responsible for even less crime per-capita NA than average white people).  Same holds true for the amount of white soldiers who committed acts against other soldiers.

Something like this happens and people get worried about Muslims  ???.  Timothy McVeigh, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahlmer didn't make me scared of white people.  Maybe I should be.

True enough, but most if not all of the guys going rogue in the American military for the past few years have been Muslim.  That tends to skew the viewpoint somewhat however unfair to the majority of Islamic faith.

It only takes one Radical Imam or Mullah to get to the ones that all ready feel  that they are being treated unfairly or oppressed. It is even easier if they are young and impressionable. In Beirut there are posters and paintings of Martyrs all over the place and they are Idolized  in the same way that sports stars or rock stars are.

How many of us whose family have been in this country for many generations still don't feel a certain loyalty  or ties to the land of our forfathers.  Some of these people were are only first or second generation American. I'm not condoning their actions by any means but I'm expecting it to happen.

The problem is how do you avoid it.  How do you tell the radicals from the ones that aren't. How do you question your own people to find out were their loyalties are. You can't just say "Every one of musslim faith, back ground, or ties to the Arab world is not allowed access to weapons if your all ready in the military. If your not currently in your not allowed to serve in the military." You can't put them in segregated areas or discriminate against them because of our charter of rights and freedoms. So how do you solve it? I have no idea how and I don't envy the US military with this problem.

Start listening to soldiers complaints.
Start listening when people say "This guy is a nut case and going to go off the deep end"

People are afraid to question this stuff for fear of the R bomb being dropped.

What if they don't show up on your Radar? What about the soldier that goes about his business does as he is told then just lets go one day.  The American Major Down in Texas did he show any signs that he was going to snap?

As a matter of fact he did.  Go back and read the whole topic and see how he raised questions amongst his peers and superiors.

Then obviously there is little that can be done, however..

Yes he did. Considerably I would say.

Prior to the shooting, he had expressed extremist views which had been brought to the attention of his superiors and the FBI. Hasan was also monitored by intelligence exchanging e-mails asking for spiritual guidance regarding violence with Imam Anwar al-Awlaki

Hasan made a presentation titled "The Koranic World View As It Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military" during his senior year of residency at Walter Reed, which was not well received by some attendees. He had recommended that the Department of Defense "should allow Muslims [sic] Soldiers the option of being released as "Conscientious objectors" to increase troop morale and decrease adverse events"

a medical school classmate, said that while other students' projects focused on topics such as water contamination, Hasan's project dealt with "whether the war on terror is a war against Islam."

According to retired Colonel Terry Lee, "He said 'maybe Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor'.

Hasan's business card describes him as a psychiatrist specializing in Behavioral Health – Mental Health – Life Skills, and contains the acronyms SoA(SWT).[42][43]According to investigators, the acronym "SoA" is commonly used on jihadist websites as an acronym for "Soldier of Allah" or "Servant of Allah", and SWT is commonly used by Muslims to mean "subhanahu wa ta'ala" (Glory to God) The cards neglected to mention his military rank.

Hasan had come to the attention of federal authorities at least six months before the attacks, because of internet postings he appeared to have made discussing suicide bombings and other threats

Hasan was investigated by the FBI after intelligence agencies intercepted at least 18 e-mails between him and al-Awlaki between December 2008 and June 2009. Even before the contents of the e-mails were revealed, terrorism expert Jarret Brachman said that Hasan's contacts with al-Awlaki should have raised "huge red flags".

This is the type of behavior and warnings I was referring to.
