Beechwood Cemetery 'unsafe' for visitors after weekend storm

The Ottawa CitizenApril 27, 2009

OTTAWA -- The public is being asked to avoid visiting Beechwood Cemetery as work crews continue to clean up after Saturday’s windstorm.

“We’re asking asking families to stay away,” said Roger Boult, director of operations at the 65-hectare cemetery.

“The main road is open now from one end to the other. It’s the secondary roads that are still littered with trees — there are maybe 50 trees across the secondary roads. We’d prefer not to have people walking in here. It's unsafe,” he said.

“The problems is the hangers left in the trees in the branches above you. You are walking looking down or forward and you don’t have the tendency to look up to see if there’s a branch about to fall on your head. That’s what we’re concerned with,” add Mr. Boult

“We prefer as little activity in the cemetery as possible for the next couple of weeks.”

‘This is very much like the ice storm’

The devastation at Beechwood Cemetery had groundskeepers in tears,

I talked to Marcel from Beechwood/NMC today;

The National Military section is ok and was not damaged by the storm.

The trees planted "in memory" around the cenotaph are ok too.
