Now here is the $64,000 question, do most like a video because they just happen to like the song?  For me I think the majority of music videos are so so, nothing really inspired or original.  For the most part all your getting is the band performing (or pretending to perform), its the settings that are different. Yawn.  Don't get me wrong, I like the songs themselves its the videos that are the boring part.  Videos by Tool are a great example of really original and different videos.  Heck, even the video for twisted transistor is pretty unique when compared to the vast majority of videos out there.

Yeah, a lot of people do just seem to like the video's that have a song they enjoy, but some video's do have a good message. Boom by SOAD is another good one, powerful message. Just excessively anti-Bush. Same with Megalomaniac by Incubus, horrible song, the video's pretty darn good though.
