WWI soldier's remains found

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRUSSELS - The remains of an Australian First World War soldier have been unearthed at a battle site in Belgium, Australia's embassy in Brussels said Wednesday.

The remains, found at the site of the Battle of Messines, were identified as those of an Australian serviceman as fragments of his military insignia and uniform were also unearthed, said embassy spokeswoman Isabelle Draux.

There was a good chance the soldier would eventually be named, she added.

"The Australian government is firm in our commitment to honour our war dead, and is already undertaking historical research to establish any identification links," Australia's Defence Minister Warren Snowden said in a statement released in Brussels.
