An elderly driver narrowly escaped serious injury after a steel pole impaled his car in the parking lot of an east-end shopping centre Sunday morning.

The driver, a 94-year-old war veteran, was trapped after the arm of a metal gate pierced the engine and continued right through the passenger compartment, tearing through his pants.

"I was very lucky," said driver James Anderson.

Emergency crews rushed to the Eglinton Square parking lot in the Eglinton Avenue and Victoria Park area but were relieved to find Anderson safe and suffering only from a minor cut.

"It looked like it was millimeters away from being a very bad call, a catastrophy," said Andy McIlroy with Toronto EMS. "It could have punctured one of his major arteries in a leg but he's a very lucky man."

Police say the traffic gate was ajar and got caught in the car as it moved forward.

This is one lucky, lucky man. Glad he is okay.

Andy was right. But, war vet or not, what caused the accident? I know it is a sensitive subject, but at age 94 are his driving skills still up to par? Especially around the Golden Mile.
