I personally love the idea of modular kit, issue or not. I think that a person's equipment should be set up according to their objective, whether it be taking the trench or bird watching in the Rockies for a week. Shouldn't civvies be given the same ability to customize their gear based on what they're doing and where they're going (i.e. adding/removing pockets, having a ruck+daypack, in other words, the things that PALS allows a person to do)?

Cheers,
Pinky

P.S. If there is already a manufacturer that has done this please provide links and/or pics

I think so... but the biggest place I see modular gear in the Military is in tactical vests or plate carriers.  Not much of that civvie side.  Modular packs would be cool... Kifaru I believe has modular pouches you can put on the inside of their packs.

That's true, I know Kifaru does modular stuff available to everyone, but they're geared mainly towards Military folk. And at those prices it's pretty much only people heading to the sandbox who would pay that much.

Cheers,
Pinky

Maybe I should clarify: By "civy gear makers" I mean manufacturers who make gear for civilians, i.e. hiking/camping supplies. As far as I can tell Maxpedition designs its products with law enforcement/military applications in mind.

Civilian packs tend to be more specialised as numerous users do not want the extra weight of the PALS straps - Most manufacturers have loops attachments that allow for additional pouches and double as their compression straps.

- Get a Kifaru - you will not be disappointed.

I have two Maxpedtion packs -- nice but not in Kif's league.

*smacks self in forehead* I completely forgot how hair-splitting some people can be when it comes to extra weight. I once heard of a guy that cut all the tags out of his clothes just to shave off that extra few grams. I would love to get a Kifaru, but the gods of money hath decreed that I shall not own one any time soon.

Cheers,
Pinky

I concur: Maxpedition has stopped making most of their products in the two camouflage patterns Tri-desert and Woodland, thus aiming more for the civilian market. Obviously they still tend to draw the attention of LEO's and the like, but I'd still call it a civilian product anytime!

Never the less I understand what you mean :)

Sorry for being the rotten egg here, but Kifaru is -in my opinion- way to expencive. I mean...
Are they gold-plating them? Do they have rubies and emeralds worked into the straps?... What?

Not a negative word about their quality!
Allthough I've never handled one, I trust all those good reviews they've got...
But if I ever were to buy one of their products at those prices, I'd expect to keep the truck that delivers it!

Yeah-yeah, quality costs. I do agree!
But honestly...

Anyway, Kifaru isn't exactly a civilian product so...  8)

Exit Patroels ;D
