Police have arrested two 19-year-old suspects after recovering three antique guns that were stolen from Casa Loma over the weekend.

The non-functioning firearms – a Sten submachine gun, Bren light machine gun and a Bock bolt-action rifle – were stolen during a break-in at the historic Toronto castle early Saturday.

Toronto police Det. Colin Greenaway said the thieves had apparently buried the guns in Mississauga after recognizing that it had been “an error in judgment” to take them.

“I think they consumed a lot of alcohol (before the break-in) and it seemed to be good thing to do,” Greenaway said.

Using DNA analysis, fingerprints and tips from the public, police located the weapons yesterday and arrested two suspects on break-and-enter charges.

One of the suspects was also charged with possession of stolen property after police found the guns buried in a forest about 32 kilometres from his Mississauga home, Greenaway said.

The weapons went missing from a Queen’s Own Rifles exhibit on the third floor of Casa Loma at around 2 a.m. Saturday. Police expected to return them later today.

Casa Loma’s director of operations said he was relieved that the antiques had been recovered.

“That’s great news,” said Brian Cormier. “(The Queen’s Own Rifles) owns the displays and I’m sure they will be thrilled along with us.”

Patrick Maier-Trevizan, 19, of Toronto, and Piotr Baczynski, 19, of Mississauga were scheduled to appear in court this morning.

Forget the DNA, one of these idiots was all ready " on file " having been printed after  a previous theft conviction. Not CSI Miami, but simple , basic police work.

They left a blood trail about a kilometre long, away from the scene. One of them cut his arm going thru the window.
