Hey guys,

I was told today by a serving PO1 that during one of the Athabaskan's deployments (1st gulf war perhaps ?) it had a "scud" missile fired at it and it missed by 2 miles. Can anyone corroborate this statement ?

The crew of his ship, HMCS Athabaskan, spent the voyage to the Middle East training.

....

Being tracked by weapons put his heart rate through the roof, but the worst was when an Iraqi Scud missile flew over the destroyer in January 1991.

A matter of pure luck I would say.  The SCUD is/was notoriously innaccurate.

I'm sure that the SCUD wasn't fired at the ship and that it was being in the right place under the flightpath at the time it happened.  2 miles is only about 10000 ft, so yeah it would have missed by 2 miles if it went overhead.  :)
