If you are really in a pinch remember that in canada the landlord is required to hold onto any of the crap you leave behind for 6 months.  If he/she says no, then just remind them about the tennat act and say you/your friend will be back in X number of days to pick up your stuff.

Yes my for living on res you couldnt claim that your not just a student, thankfully the res contract I had states that anything left will be stored and you will be charged for the cost of storage for the item up to the cost of the item.
