CANSOFCOM Search and Rescue?

-Skeletor- said:
What would be the benefit of increasing the manning(and associated kit, etc) of 427 SOAS to have a in house CSAR Platoon?  As well,  would 427 need to have it's own selection, etc for recruiting members to fill the CSAR positions?

What do you see as the negative of say, tasking CSOR(or other CANSOF pers) as required for CSAR?

Also,  why should it be a 427 tasking?  Why couldn't any of the other Tac Hel Sqns be tasked with it?

Well, from what I was reading, a lot of you fellas thought CSAR should be dealt with by CANSOF, so I thought I'd give you guys some food for thought because it'd be interesting to hear what others had to say about it. And I suppose there's nothing wrong with tasking any CANSOFCOM members for CSAR as required, but wouldn't it be more orderly to have a unit designated for the recovery of casualties? I would suppose that this platoon would be selected through CANSOFCOM as a whole, making it a different unit that simply falls under the 427 branch of command. I would assume that CSAR would be the same as SAR, other than training to conduct those tasks while being engaged... This is just hypothetical guys, I know that a lot of different things have to be taken into account, things I can't account for, when actually creating a unit like this. Also, I AM NOT saying I'm a SF expert, I just honestly wanted to hear what you guys had to say about this hypothetical CSAR platoon. Sorry if I came across as acting ignorant.

CSAR is neither a unit, nor a platform.  It is a system of systems and personnel (think AWACS, refuelers, top cover/escort, extraction platforms, extract QRF, med support, logistics support, international staging as required, etc...).  Do an Internet search for the "JWP 3-66", read up a bit on Joint Personnel Recovery, and you'll appreciate all the various agencies that are involved in a standing CSAR capability.

As far as standing CSAR forces, I know of only the Americans and the French who have such capabilities.

If Canada were to attempt to establish such a standing capability, it would be a CF effort for certain.  It is fairly safe to say that the requirements to do so would eclipse anything currently available to the CF.
