Interesting article of what if; couldv'e scenarios;  Think then of 'what if / could have happened' if a province separated in this  (highly unlikely) worst case scenario....

'what if' said separatists won with a 50% +1majority? - could a civil war have resulted between the slightly sparest majority and slightly federalist minority?

what if  other cultures (First Nations, immigrant cultures, Anglo/Franc minority, etc) of the soon-to-be new nation decided against separation?

how would this new country have continued to pay for and maintain social services? Increased personal taxes? (most likely)... Expected some continued federal payments? ( probably highly unlikely as the federalist government at the time would most likely have been thrown out on their collective a** if agreed to this concession)...Lobby for some support / aid from a 'mother' (eg; France or England) country? Maybe (but most probably doubtful) for a short period as most other countries were dealing with their own home concerns.

how would our American cousins have felt with another socialist country sitting on their northern border?

how would have border disputes / right of passage be handled? (eg; Labrador / Quebec border; Great lakes; St. Lawrence; off shore boundaries /natural resources; passage through new country via 'old' Trans Canada getting from point A to B )

How would defence and other departments have been handled?

..makings of a good novel, too bad I can't write  ;D

I ain't sure how that could not happen...

... and I don't see France helping Québec, except maybe with an accolade
and a few words of encouragement...

Groan.... do we really need this intellectual discussion?

It didn't happen & the prospect of it's ugly head being raised once again makes me shudder and gag,,,,

WHY?

That novel has been written.I read it in the lat 70's  "Killing Ground"is the title

Anybody interested in the topic of Quebec's separation would do well to pick up a copy of a book by Reed Scowen, "Time To Say Goodbye: Building A Better Canada Without Quebec" (ISBN 978-0-7710-7981-8).  He does a very good job of approaching the issue objectively, but with informed insight gained from years of service in the Quebec government.

..........If you lived in Quebec the last time this subject was hot........ it was a ball breaker and would ruin your day.... every day

it ain't funny.... not by a long shot!

I hear your pain...

... and I don't think that the PQ will win the march elections,
so we're safe for a few more years.

Just a quick question for per's who were in during the last referendum. What were our plans for Canadian bases on "foreign soil"?Were we going to keep that land and pay rent on it?Were we going to remove all equipment?Or were their any plans at all?

there were no plans, it didn't happen, it won't happen and nothing good will develop from this discussion.  If you are curious..... do a search - this subject was discussed ad-nauseum .... with no adequate DS Solution provided in the end.

Mods.... can we kill this (PPPPPPlease?)

Been written a couple of times actually Killing Grounds being the first, Victory? I think was the last at least as far as  I know.

BTW you still have my copy of Killing Grounds ? I know you're a slow reader there ole buddy , but you confiscated it out of my ruck ...er I loaned it to you in 1979. ;D

.... don't forget EXXONERATION that Gen Rohmer followed up with..........

Troops, it was just intended as a (hopefully) reasonable discussion of a 'what if' if a province (be it Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland, etc) decided to separate and what, if any ramifications there would be for said province and country; but obvious if the subject is too sensitive, please mods by all means close it (and I do not mean this sarcastically)

Discussed, debated and sliding fast again...

Now it's just another locked thread on a topic that's been posed (and most often...locked) before.
