Interesting article of what if; couldv'e scenarios; Think then of 'what if / could have happened' if a province separated in this (highly unlikely) worst case scenario....
'what if' said separatists won with a 50% +1majority? - could a civil war have resulted between the slightly sparest majority and slightly federalist minority?
what if other cultures (First Nations, immigrant cultures, Anglo/Franc minority, etc) of the soon-to-be new nation decided against separation?
how would this new country have continued to pay for and maintain social services? Increased personal taxes? (most likely)... Expected some continued federal payments? ( probably highly unlikely as the federalist government at the time would most likely have been thrown out on their collective a** if agreed to this concession)...Lobby for some support / aid from a 'mother' (eg; France or England) country? Maybe (but most probably doubtful) for a short period as most other countries were dealing with their own home concerns.
how would our American cousins have felt with another socialist country sitting on their northern border?
how would have border disputes / right of passage be handled? (eg; Labrador / Quebec border; Great lakes; St. Lawrence; off shore boundaries /natural resources; passage through new country via 'old' Trans Canada getting from point A to B )
How would defence and other departments have been handled?
..makings of a good novel, too bad I can't write ;D
