Hey dudes,

Looking for some feedback for what scope power to get on a scope.

I'm torn between a 4x-16x and a 6x-24x scope  (Vortex Viper HS-T, MRAD)
It's going on a Remington 700 with a 20" barrel.  Ranges will be between 300 meters and 600 meters but ultimately may try pushing out to 1000 meters.

my default answer to this is Leupold Mk6 3-18x  ;)

I would not bother with the 6-24x, for your application the 4-16x is good.

I'd cut the barrel down to 16" - you can still get 1000m with a 16" .308  without the weight and bulk of excess barrel

Thanks for the advice Kevin, 4-16X it is.    I'll pick up that 3-18x if you can suggest a somewhere that will let me canex plan it :)

On your side of the border, that's an option...

I thought that bolt guns/lever gun where not subject the asinine barrel ruling -- I used to have a .30WCF (30-30 pre 30-30 time frame) Winchester 94 Saddle Ring Carbine that was a 16" barrel and a .303 Savage (not .303 Brit) 1893 Savage lever gun that where un-restricted (or when I inherited them had never been treated as restricted)  - no idea who has those guns now -- I stored them at someone's house when I was in Iraq and no one owned up to having them when I got around to moving down south...

It's not the length of the barrel, but the cutting.

Buy a replacement short barrel and install it - legal.

Cut an existing barrel down to that same length - not legal.

AH yes -- yet a Gunsmith with a manufacturing rider on his Firearms Business License can cut it -- remanufacturing...

Found a couple of good deals but having a hard time making a decision.

Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 EBR-1 SFP MOA/MRAD

I can pick up either for the same price ($900)

Just mounted the 6-24x50mm Vortex with MOA turrets and MOA reticle on a new Accuracy International AT.  Extremely pleased with the results.  I have only had time to zero at 100, but the glass clarity was excellent and I think I prefer the finer MOA reticle to the mil reticle now that visual range estimation is no longer a primary concern.

Bass Pro had it in stock, walked in walked out with scope and badly dented Master Card.

Just looked at the Vortex red dot with built in 3x magnification. I found that the distance for eye relief was critical and not very flexible and the field of view limited.
