When releasing, what are the advantages to going into the supplementary reserves?

I was told it allows you to go back into the system quicker if you decide to come back. (Is that true?)

It certainly seems to allow you to keep your rank and some of your quals if you come back.

There are limits, keep in mind. I know of one Cpl who after 10 years in the sup res kept his rank, but has to take SQ and retake QL3.

Rule of thumb is after 5 years and you`re starting over, unless you`ve maintained skills in other employment (liek a veh tech who goes to the SR' works as a mechanic, then rejoins 6 years later).

Just adding some meat to this thread......

Supplementary Reserve (Supp Res)
The Supp Res provides individual augmentation, on a voluntary basis, in order to enable the CF to mount and sustain operations in all stages of mobilization. Members are not required to perform duty or training except when on active service. Members of the Supp Res are obliged to serve only when placed on active service by the Governor in Council or when called out in an emergency. Members of the Supplementary Reserve may, with their consent, be attached posted to another sub-component of the Reserve Force for employment or training.

I just finished an attached posting from the supp reserve at HMCS JOLLIET in Sept-Iles Quebec for 4 years (army medic). Spent most of it on class A, but did about 6 months of class B, mostly in Esquimalt instructing BMOQ.

***CAUTION***

make sure that you are choosing the correct path when it comes time to release...

Primary Reserve... usually class A, parading with a local unit with comittments and opportunities.

Primary Reserve List... also class A, attached to a "national unit" but not necessarily parading... typically specialists... (medical in my case)

I have been warned that the Supplementary Reserve is a black hole for files that is near impossible to get out of.  You release and are held on a list somewhere in the ether for potential call up in times of crisis / conscription.

I think that you are looking for the Primary Reserves...  but will stand corrected if needed.
