Soldier gets 8 years in jail abuse scandal
BAGHDADâ â€The highest-ranking U.S. soldier charged in the Abu Ghraib scandal was sentenced yesterday to eight years in prison, the severest punishment so far in the case that broke in April with the publication of photos and video showing Americans humiliating and abusing naked Iraqi prisoners.
Staff Sgt. Ivan Frederick's lawyer, Gary Myers, called the sentence "excessive" and said he intended to appeal.
Col. Judge James Pohl also reduced Frederick's rank to private, ordered him to forfeit his pay and had him dishonourably discharged.
Frederick, 38, pleaded guilty Wednesday to taking part in the sexual and physical mistreatment of prisoners, telling Pohl that he knew his actions were wrong at the time he committed them. He also admitted helping tie wires to the fingers and penis of one hooded prisoner and telling him he could be electrocuted.
