Regular officer progression

How many army captains get promoted to major and how long does it take ? Is it just a matter of time or does it depend on whether your senior officers like you ? Is there a particular type of personality that gets promoted quicker ? What are the qualities that make a good major ? I am applying for DEO Artillery.

You definatly have to know the finer points of politics if you want to get to Major. Being visible to you superiors and well liked is also needed.

Also, being bilingual is a must as well (at least B or A standard in French).
