okay, so currently I'm getting my degree and I'm also part of a communications regiment.

now my question is once I finish my degree, what would the process be to getting my commission and becoming an officer? can I even do that? I've tried searching for an answer but no luck, idk, maybe I'm using the wrong keywords and I'm a bit apprehensive of asking at my unit for whatever reason.

I'm guessing I wouldn't have to redo BMQ and all that wonderful stuff, but guessing and knowing are two different things...

my other guess would be that this doesn't happen often either and that there might not be anyone here that has an answer for me lol

Since no one answered your question, I will try, but remember that your unit has the complete accurate answer to this question.

I have seen somewhere on this site that when you are already in a unit and you want to become an officer you have to be nominated for it, you cannot apply.

I personally joined a reserve unit as an officer, before I finished my degree. I don't know why you did not do that if you were interested in becoming an officer... But now your only option is to talk about it with someone at your unit.

(I remember when I went for my interview at the unit, there was an NCM trying out as well for the position.)

Good luck

As a Reservist you can inform your unit that you would like to be considered for commissioning. I would suggest that you talk to your unit Recruiter, who should know how many officers the unit is trying to recruit.  The Recruiter may also know how the unit prefers to handle commissioning of NCMs, some units are more willing to accept officers by that route than others.

You may also want to speak to the Adjutant, or any other officer that you are comfortable with, to identify your wish to be considered for commissioning. They will also be able to advise you on the unit's usual course of action for such requests.

I can tell you that your unit will not consider you for Sigs O position with a BA in Psychology. You should talk to your unit recruiter; he can explain your options and let you know what officer trades your degree will qualify you for.

I wasn't aware your degree needed to be relevant to your trade.

hmm, I guess this gives me more to consider

sorry for double post

could someone explain the whole becoming an officer thing, I'm not familiar with it at all

also, I've read of some people (and a previous poster who responded) who said you can go the officer route before finishing a degree, how does that work? I thought you needed your degree to become an officer...in short, I'm a really clueless NCM :p

and actually, it's an Honours B.Sc. with Specialisation in Psychology, if that changes anything lol

Several things:

You should read the Site Guidelines and familiarize yourself with the SEARCH function.  There are many topics on becoming an officer.

You probably have already received the best advice in the above posts.

It should also be pointed out that it is expected of all CF members, not only those who are or aspire to be officers, to communicate in proper English, using proper grammar and punctuation.  One would think that someone in an Honours program would also have developed those skills by now.

Please use some of your "keywords" and read some of the topics on becoming an officer.  Visit your CoC and ask them questions.  Not everyone who holds a Degree will become an officer, but all officers are expected to attain a Degree.  If there are no "officer positions" there will be no recruiting of officers.  Your unit will also sit a board to select who they want as officers, should there be vacancies.

There are a lot of factors in this matter, and many topics here that address them.

From the Sig O monogram (mind you it is for Reg Force)

Direct Entry applicants must hold the degree of Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science from an accredited Canadian university. The preferred degree is the Bachelor of Engineering in one of the following disciplines: Electrical/ Electronics, Software, Computer or Physics. Consideration will also be given to those holding the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Aerospace Systems Management, Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering, and those holding the degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Applied Science, Mathematics, Physics or Space Science

Hey Jak3_dude

You can join the reserve (not the regular force) as an officer before you finish your degree.
My unit (Comm) used to take any Bachelor's degree, but they said that people with science background were more successful than others and so they became less flexible.
In the end, it is your job to sell yourself. Talk to your recruiting office.
Units do need competent Sig O, if you think you have something good to offer, don't be shy. Talk to them!
Only you can make this happen, this site cannot do that for you.

Sorry about the cruddy form.  I'm so use to posting on normal forums that it has become habit. I will remember that for current and future posts.

I have to say that all the information you guys have given so far has been very useful.  I'll talk to the recruiting officer at my unit and see what options are available to me from here.

Thank you guys and stay safe out there.
