Posting with recommendation from specialist

Good afternoon,

I have been dealing with my MTBI for the past 6 months. If you know what an MTBI is you know it comes with some other unwanted issues. That being said, I finally have been seen by a neuro psychologist who is recommending that I be posted out of Quebec for a number of reasons. My question is, do specialists and doctors have any say, when recommending for a posting? I've been at my current base for 4 years now (Anglophone in Valcartier).

Hello everyone,

I'm currently posted to CFB Valcartier as a unilingual anglophone. During an O Group my Sgt told me I am not allowed to speak English and none of my coworkers are to speak English to me as we are at a French language unit. Could anyone provide me with some insight on what I should do about this? I've been working hard to learn French and I'm comfortable with ordering a coffee at Tim Horton's and paying for gas/groceries. But when it comes to being able to work, I cannot function.

Remind them Canada has both English and French as official languages and they have the obligation to communicate with you via your desired language.

Sound like fucking harassment.  Clearly this Sgt doesn't give two fucks about his people.  Instead of making everyone feel a part of the team, he is doing his best to isolate folks.

Yeah it is very isolating, I am having a really hard time with anxiety at work because of this. Don't feel like a part of the team at all, just like an outsider.

For what its worth I have many gunner friends who were only fluent in french and had terrible english, guess what? They got posted to shilo and had to learn english because no one there would bother to even try to ask them anything in french, so for any french speaking whenever they get posted to an english unit they have to learn so id say you have to learn french if you are working in a french unit.

I had a TBI from a military accident and a neuropsychologist has said my learning is effected from it so learning a new language at 30 is going to be tough. As for why I got posted here, I have no idea whatsoever.

That is relevant. The Canadian Forces remain bound by the legal 'duty to accommodate' people with disabilities, which it sounds like you qualify for. Here is the pertinent DAOD. I double checked, and it does explicitly apply to uniformed members.

Quite simply, the Sgt's order is illegal. I feel very confident of that. You are able to use English at work. Others cannot be ordered not to. Realistically, you should be posted to an English language unit.

I don't see it as protecting CF members.

The only real reference to military members is "an order that applies to officers and non-commissioned members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF members) who act as managers or supervisors of DND employees". The statement regarding "accommodating the employment-related needs of DND employees" does not include military members.

Randy_Lahey is definitely not being treated reasonably or fairly, in my opinion, and it does not appear that his chain-of-command cares.

I'm not sure if this is relevant as well but all the specialists I saw after my accident only spoke French so I never had access to their services in English and didn't understand anything. My WO doesn't seem to care either. I do IT support for the base and that includes resolving issues over the phone so you can imagine how impossible it is for me. It would be no different if I was sent to Spain and expected to work in Spanish, I can't understand squat.

A question,....in 2015 you said you had been posted there for 4 years, so now you've been at Valcartier for at least 6 years and you haven't picked up the lingo?

Could a little frustration at that be the cause of your bosses ways?
