As a veteran of the 82nd Airborne, I'm considering joining the CF. I would join under the DEO program and would possibly make a return to the infantry? Maybe something more marketable in the civilian sector?.

Can anyone give any suggestions/requirements to become an instructor? I.E. Number of jumps, trades which are eligible to complete Basic Para(seeing as I have the U.S. course), where is the course currently taught?

Welcome to Army.ca. Here are some reading references that are core to how Army.ca operates. I strongly recommend you take a moment to read through these to give you a better sense for the environment here. It will help you avoid the common pitfalls which can result in miscommunication and confusion. I have a few answers sorry I missed the thread earlier 82

Ok well to answer your question first off we do not have a Regiment like the 82nd in our military what we do have is 3 seperate Jump Companies in the the Light Infantry Bn's. Second the course s available to anyone in the CF  (generaly Army though)the unit only has to aquire a slot on a serial being run. The course is done at what used to be known as the Canadian Parachute Center (it has a new name and I can never remember it)  at CFB Trenton (it has a new name and I can never remember it).

As for being a PI I do not know the number of jumps required but I am sure your jump logs with the US Army are valid  for counting jumps.

1) Anyone in the CF can take Basic Para (odd of getting a slot are unit dependant however)
2) Unless you got CF wings while in the 82nd your US jumps are going to count for naught, you will to attend CABC , CPC , Advanced Land Warfare School (or whatever its called now - I still call it CABC) and accumulate CF jumps
3) Prerequisits for JM are 25 static line deployments - and for all intensive purposes in a hard para role (not tech a req - but...)
4) JM is a prereq for PI

There you have CF Jumps required, I assume then that it makes his Jump log totaly invalid?

Great replies!

That's too bad those jumps mean nothing, other than a fancy jump log and good memories.

So how easy is it to get those jumps in? We had a program called "Funjumps" where you could hotload a C-130 on Saturdays from one of the many DZ's and get up to 4 jumps in a day. Otherwise you were often "chasing birds" trying to fill chutes for other units after supper. We often did this afe times a week just to pad the numbers.

We have a Cas Para system but as for the frequency of jumps thats a question best left to someone in one of the Para Coy's

Thanks to those who've replied.

I'll keep poking around the site to see what info I can gain and ask more questions BEFORE I make another trip into the recruiting office. Seems like you get better answers here.

You may want to post your question to the boys on the Canadian Airborne sites some haven't  been out too long. Here are the links

does canada recognize wings from other nations.  in particular commonwealth.  will they let you wear them.

also do you have to take the complete course. or does the military offer a refresher or testing jump to prove your mettle and be able to wear canuch wings.

Does anyone know when the next jump course is being run ? or how often they run ?
thanks.
:cdn:
(and i know there hasnt been a post here for more than a year, but ill take the shot anyway)

They run ... a lot.

Both the courses ...

and the students on them.  ;)
