A maroon school... cool, I wish I had the chance to go to a maroon school when I was a kid...

ABN UPDATE OCT 2008

Introduction. 16 Air Assault Brigade recently handed over command to 3 Commando Brigade in Helmand Province. All 4 Battalions of the Parachute Regiment and supporting Airborne Units served along side each other on OP HERRICK this summer.

1 PARA. 1 PARA continue to move from strength to strength as the core of the Special Forces Support Group. Up to half the Battalion can be continually deployed on operations and the other half undergoes a heavy training programme. The depth of their significance is reflected in 2 MBEs and 2 MCs in the last 2 Operational Honours Lists.

2 PARA. 2 PARA return from Battlegroup (BG) North in the Helmand Task Force shortly. The BG was deployed with the Coys groups deployed in Forward Operating Bases. Throughout the summer they have been continually engaged with the enemy’s array of IEDs, small arms, RPGs, mines etc. 2 PARA’s tenacity has helped to undermine the Taliban’s tactics and command coherence. 10 Parachute Regiment and 5 supporting arms have been killed in the BG.

3 PARA. 3 PARA have all safely returned from the Regional Battle Group South role in Kandahar. They worked across the southern provinces, conducting influence to kinetic operations. Variety included refurbishing a school in maroon to restoring order in Kandahar City after the prison break. The tour culminated when the BG expanded to 1200 troops when tasked to secure the final approach to the Kajaki Dam for the delivery of a new turbine. This was a huge Brigade operation that included 2 US aircraft carriers in support.

4 PARA. 4 PARA have provided over 80 Individual Reinforcements to mostly 2 and 3 PARA and are widely regarded as the role model TA Bn. One soldier was killed in the 2 PARA BG. Recruiting is good as they expand into the NW of England. They were the framework for SOPARA and as always the Arnhem commemoration.

Manning and Recruiting. The 3 Regular Battalions remain around 50 undermanned. This said recruiting is good as all recent ITC recruit platoons have been filled to capacity. This strike rate must continue if we are to achieve the aspiration of being fully manned by late 2010.

The Museum of the Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces. The new Museum will open at the Imperial War Museum Duxford on Mon 8 Dec 2008. Attendance at the opening day is by invitation only. The Museum will be open to the public on 9 Dec.

PRA. The PRA has done an outstanding job this summer to support the Regiment on operations. This includes parcels to theatre, huge representation at funerals, parading at the Oxford coroner’s office for repatriations, visiting Selly Oak, visiting sick at home and taking them out for a meal/drink.

Daft,

What is the source of this article/report? the MOD website? Just wondering since you didn't add a link.

oops...

It's a regular bulletin issued by RHQ PARA in the UK. All open source stuff as it's broadcast to the many members of the Parachute Regiment 'diaspora' around the world.

It seems as though the Paras continue to uphold their reputation as strong and proffessional soldiers, good job guys!
