This weapon system is a game changer for the American warfighter," John Belanger, a spokesperson for Saab, which manufactures the gun, told FoxNews.com. “Additionally, the M3 will provide our soldiers a cannon-caliber weapon that will reduce the dependence and cost associated to artillery and air support. Commanders now can deploy his units to any combat environment without overburdening his soldiers or need to trade lethality for portability.”

Someone check the serial number on it. We might have finally found the missing GGFG one.  ;D

At 15 lbs and "nearly a mile" for range I would say it is significantly more useful than our 84mm SRAAW.

Car Gustav - a popular nom de guerre for troops who involve themselves with....women of tenuous mentality..... ;)

???

Am I missing something here?  84 mm Carl Gustav vs 84 mm Carl Gustav?

Other than an updated version (?), it is still a Carl G.  Same 84 mm munitions as all Carl G's.

Depending on the mix of ammunition acquired by the US, they may have some additional flexibility; Canada doesn't stock all 84mm variants.

Agreed, with the different ammunition types available it's also a perfect weapon for grape-hut busting!

Yes, the US Carl G is "Be all you can be", ours is "Budget cuts, Budget cuts"

Yes, I know.  We are of the "in time of need purchasers" types.

Isn't it wonderful all these new modern weapon systems that have come onto the battlefield within the last few years.

Good to see the US military taking the lead. The rest of NATO will be begging to have them. ;D

They likely have the new fancy schmancy M3 while we're stuck with the old 'heavy metal' model:

The current M3 version was introduced in 1991, using a thin steel liner containing the rifling, strengthened by a carbon fiber outer sleeve. External steel parts were replaced with aluminium alloys or plastics, reducing the empty weapon weight considerably—from 16.35 kg to 10 kg.

I think the article is just a bit inaccurate, for a second I thought there was a newer version than the M3 or something and maybe new ammo as well.... I can't find a 15 lb Carl G, only the 22 lb (10kg) version that daftandbarmy is referring to, and there is no ammo listed for it on Wikipedia that can reach past 1000m except the illum round (2300m) and smoke rounds (1300m), neither of which I would want to have to shoot at a tank.

We also have the M3.

I have never seen one, but then again I don't get out much. Nice to see the kiddies getting a go.

(Thomas the) Tank (engine) action!

Am I dating myself or is our #2 in close for stability and fall of shot observation?

After experiencing their first live round "down range" the #2 usually has figured out that the closer (s)he hugs the #1, the lesser the affects of sound and blast.  ;D

As a gunner I hated people that deemed it neccessary to hug in so close it jostled me and ruined my aim.  :)  Although to be fair I know what you are talking about.  My first time as #2 the BB scared the shit out of poor Pte MJP due to the thump on the chest.  Now I know the actual worse is being the ARSO for countless serials.  Oh the headache...

On the other hand IMHO it is such a horrible rangeism that people would continue to do it on operations.  The few times we used the Carl G (we only had RAP rounds not HEDP for a long time or we would have used it more), it was loaded under cover and only the gunner exposed themselves with the weapon under covering fire.

A 'three legged race under fire' just came to mind.  ;D

I have loads and loads of experience with old Carl G (We ARE very well known to each other). I fire many, many live rounds. I have also been the ARSO for many, many, many live rounds.

#2, GET YOUR HANDS OFF THE NUMBER ONE. You can throw off his aim, he does not need a hug. Get over the "shock", its not that bad.

When you hear stand by, snap your knoggin forward. Here endeth the lesson.

Yes there has been plenty of cool rounds for the Carl g, available for a long time. In the CDN Army, we tend to use HEAT RAP and HEDP alot. Both are excellent rounds. HEDP has impact and delay setting, load properly based on command "Impact Load" or "Delay Load".

Ironic, the FN MAG 58 (our C6) has been around about 55 years and it was only about 15 years ago that the yanks adopted it. The Regular yank units are now taking on the Carl G (RAngers have used it for over twenty years) and that weapon has been around about same amount of time as the FN Mag GPMG (oops forgot to mention that first time around)

Sometimes you just can't beat the classics (50 Cal, C6, 84mm and 81mm Mortar, 4 oldies but goldies)
