Are there any other weapon systems out there that can compare to the Mk 48 7.62mm Minimi?
ie. a 7.62mm LMG around the same size, weight, characteristics of the Mk48..
We are trying to find a weapon to compromise between the MAG 58 and Minimi. A weapon small and light enough for CQB type ops, but with the power of a 7.62...

The Mk 48 is a FN minimi ( C 9 A1 )chambered to take 7.62 mm shell. The only thing I can think of is a FN mag ( C 6) in the Canadian forces. The C 6 weight is about 22 lbs.

I was just having a bit of fun.  ;)

Technically, wouldn't a Mk 48 be a 7.62mm version of the Mk 46 and not a C9A1.

Calling the weapon in question a 7.62mm Minimi would be like calling an AR-10 a '7.62mm M-16'.  While getting the point across, it isn't 100% accurate.  At least, not in the way I understand it.

"We" is my unit in Australia, and "Why" is because the MAG 58 is too long, heavy, bulky and generally awkward for urban use, but the 5.56mm Minimi, while smaller, lighter and more maneouverable, does not have the desired hitting power.

The Mk48 is produced by FN and is basically a Mk 46 (of the Minimi family) rechambered for 7.62mm
That should clear it up for the regimental sticklers...

My unit has a program whereby we can put up proposals for improvements, weapons, equipment etc, backed up with the proper research

now, I'm jealous and pissed off.

I can't think of any real 7.62 platforms that small, offhand. There are "para" and other versions of the FN MAG. I don't think this forum is your best bet for info, though. I'd suggest a forum dedicated to army-gunz, specifically.

Sorry for the question djcorneliuz, we get a lot of wannabes, airsofters and posers on the forum that we would rather not encourage their wet dreams to gun porn. :D

The Mk48 is an upscaled Mk46 -- disposable mg in 7.62mm NATO

Depending upon what you want if for you coul dbe better served by the MAG58.

Your not going to get any answers on CF deployment of them - since the only unit that has them is press shy --

Best bet is to try www.lightfighter.net  -- there are a number of CAG/AWG guys that have used them and dont mind discussing it -- or Clint Lynch who is a senior designer for FN (former KAC guy) in the MG program.

Wes is a good source for knowledge on the Aussie side (you might try PM'ing him here)

Thanks for the input guys. Just curious to see if anyone had any ideas. Will keep looking around...

The only real comparator for the Mk48 is that Mk43 POS -- and since the 48 came out noone wants to touch the Mk43 and simply allow it and the rest of the M60 family to sailoff into history.

Guys - best advice is to IGNORE David Crane and his "Defense Review"...  The guy is an utter asshat

Mate, I hear your pain. I was lucky enough to handle and fire the Mk 48 and gather relevant detail to push up the chain for much the same reasons in relation to the question/s  you are asking. IMHO I believe the Mk 48 fits the bill.  I guess time will tell.

The M60 family isnt dead yet. There is a new version of the M60 that has been very recently produced as a prototype and it is currently being watched/tested by the US Army.

Really something newer than the Mk43 Mod1 (which still suck major ass) give it up dude SOCOM bailed on it - its dead.
The Mk48 is in use and guys love it.
