Memorial plaques stolen from Highway of Heroes overpass by Adam Frisk, 6 Mar

TORONTO - Police are asking the public for assistance after two brass plaques were stolen from a Hwy. 401 overpass.

The plaques, which pay tribute to the Canadian Armed Forces, are located at various points along a stretch of Hwy. 401 known as the Highway of Heroes.

The Ontario government dedicated the stretch of Highway 401 from CFB Trenton to Toronto as the Highway of Heroes to honour the Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

The True Patriot Love Foundation reported that two plaques were stolen from the Victoria Park overpass between December and February.

Steven Blaney, the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs issued a strong condemnation of the theft on Wednesday afternoon.

“We condemn these gross and disrespectful acts against the memory of Canada's heroes and encourage anyone who has any information to inform the local authorities,” said the statement from Blaney’s office.

The plaques are 45 by 60 centimetres and contain an image of people overlooking the highway as a soldier walks with a child holding a Canadian flag.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222 TIPS (8477).

Maybe they should look into a way of letting people know when these types of items are removed for maintenance.

Perhaps a sign of some sort with the usual "Do not remove by order of...." etc, etc. untill it is replaced.

Or maybe people should not be so over zealous in their efforts to use Social Media, to make it look like they care for the troops.  Get the facts straight before running out and......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOqOmb5hD8k&feature=share&list=FL5V7_oy16Bnd5MXBb5pyuqQ    about every ill they perceive against "Veterans".
