Video didn't give much details, anyone know anything about this? Sounds alot like the proposed Maritime Commando Regiment...

From what the video showed it looked like some of the old Airborne Sapper training updated. They also ran a combat diver course back then. Hunt up Sapper Earl, Geo or Nfld sapper for an informed opinion. Me I am only guessing. There are also a number of the Pacific fleet guys who went on jump course too, so maybe there is your answer.

I just watched the video, it looks pretty cool, but are these guys part of CSOR or are they a completely different unit all together. The other thing is if they are part of CSOR what training path do you take. The guy they interviewed said they are looking for Clearance Divers and Patrol Pathfinders, so do you do those courses first and then have to do the CSOR selection afterwards or what. The CD course is a year long in Esquimalt and you have to do the Ships diver course first and then remuster to CD, before you are accepted you have to do a two week pre-lim course and after all that is done, what go and do the CSOR selection course. You are looking at two years of training just to get into the unit. Never mind the obstacles of bosses who don't want to let you go and wives who complain about how long you are gone for. Sounds like it could be pretty convoluted to me. Any body have any comments.
Thanks, Marc

Wrong coast.  The video was the guys from the SCF.

Ask LFDTS what they think about the "alternate service delivery" for parachute training.

I wonder if they figured out you have to wash the chutes off after jumping into salt water or just ruined the lot of them ;)

A question raised that if the Army has manning issues and is reluctant to release pers to serve CANSOFCOM - which has manning issues even including the Navy and Air Force pers how can we stand up two new units?

Editied 'cause I made no sense.  Or situation normal.

Conflicting signals, although this comes from ********, so take it for what it is worth.

Makes sense that things start to slow down a little.

It's pretty hard for any military to re-equip after years of neglect, transform to meet current and future demands, and then gear itself towards securing a major upcoming domestic event...especially when the country is at war!

:salute:

I'm curious....in the private sector, outside consultants are often brought in to provide specialty training when a corporation doesn't have the assets to do the training internally.  Is there any reason why in particular for infantry training the CAF couldn't hire former soldiers/specialists from NATO allies?

What I'm thinking is if the you use a "Master Trainer System" (that is, that a CAF trainer trains the former NATO guys on Canadian-specific gear and tactics who then in turn with their combat experience train the recruits on that information as well as what they learned during that combat experience) that we could eleviate the backlog rather quickly....

I will now light my cigarette and await the firing squad for promoting such blasphemy....

Your telling me. Last night I was watching the National, and Peter Mansbridge claimed that Canada is "emulating the U.S Marines/Royal Marines".

I was told about the "Navy Marines" recruiting stand at Mount Royal College in Calgary today. Left the gym and walked over to it and asked what is was all about. The recruiter said that you have to be in the Navy for 3 years and then compete to get into the "Marines". Definatley NOT an emulation of anything except of our own institutions within the DND. Peter Mansbridge needs better sources.

As a side note, it's interesting to note that the Army News video has recently been pulled...

Most of the Navy recruiting stands I've seen also say Marine on them, as it is french for Navy.  As for being in the navy for 3 years and competing to get into the Marines, I've never heard of it.

I talked to friend who has been in the process of joining and she has not seen anything of the sort in Halifax.

I would suspect its a clear cut case of if ever.

Word they got in Shearwater from people associated with SCF this week is that the whole project is on hold

The hierarchies in the Army and Navy do not understand the concept and therefore want nothing to do with it.

Dare I ask what facts inform this opinion?

My understanding is that it's about money. I think everyone understands the concept (I may be wrong) but the enormous amount of cash to get this thing going would take away from the other things the Navy and Army are doing right now. For the Army that is the sandbox and that is chewing up a lot of cash. For the Navy we've got a real challenge too. Anyway we shall see I guess

This article and others like it scratch the surface of the issue.  As the process unfolds, people will understand more than ever that the CDS is the consumate professional soldier....

Lets just say that I have been somewhat involved with this concept and know of the roadblocks thrown up by both services.
