Hey guys.

I'm in the planning stages of creating knowtheforces.ca. This site will be an information site for people interested in joining the CF, parents looking for information and for the general population to learn about the CF and what it takes to get in.

A lot of people are interested in joining the Forces, but the official website, as much as i love it, doesn't have all the info one needs. If you need answers, you have to visit/call your recruitment center or ask questions in these forums. This forum is great, but people tend to not search before they create a topic, thus asking the same questions over and over again.

This site will have everything you need to know about the recruiting process (but not releasing confidential information like CFAT questions or interview question as stated by the CF) It will have info about your physical condition and how to prepare. It will also have information about BMQ, tips, what to expect, as well as financial info.

So if you are interested in contributing to this website by giving information and answering common questions, I will put it up on the website and give you credit on the site.

Thank you!

I think between this site and the forces.ca site all questions could be answered. What specifically is missing on both sites that would be included on yours just out of curiosity. Forces.ca was recently updated as well.

I agree that the 2 sites put together answer most if not all the questions, but to get answers on this forum, you need to dig deep to find the answers you need most of the times. I've had questions and it took my a while to find a thread that answered it.

This site will be easy to navigate and very clear. It will just be easier for people who have questions. I'll be referencing this forum quite a lot on the website.

Noob,

I am speaking from 19 years 358 days experience in the CF. What is your own background and what makes you the SME or at least what experiences do you have to set up and run such a web site?

Don't think people doing a search will want to know that before they trust what your web site has to say?

This site won't be my personal answers. What I'm doing is taking information from different resources and putting it all together into one place where it will be easy to find the answers you are looking for. I will be referencing all the information so you know that I didn't just type it up.

So you have no first hand knowledge about the subject matter other than several months in the enrolment process that , for you, is not yet done.  It appears you want the members knowledgeable members here to provide the content.  I thought that is what we do here already for:

a.  the benefit of those who visit (and hopefully stay to participate in discussions about more than joining),
b.  our own satisfaction and entertainment, and
c.  the support of 'this' site.

ArmyRick's question is still unanswered.  What do you bring to the table that would make knowledgeable members support your proposed site, perhaps to the detriment of Army.ca?

TheNoob,

When the site is ready let us know. If you have a banner ad (468x60) I'd be happy to give you some free exposure here to help get over that start-up inertia.

Cheers
Mike

Thanks a lot Mike.

So I'm just going to clarify some questions. Yes, I'm only in the recruiting stage and I do not  have the right to make a website containing my original answers since I'm not yet a member and might not have the correct answers. But, I do have the right to create a website with information from other resources such as the forces website, this forum and other trustworthy sources and put them all together into one site where it will be easy to find what you are looking for along with the reference links.

I believe that me being in the recruiting process right now will add some better content because I know what people want to know and their main questions based on what I wanted to know, which was a lot. You have no idea how many times I had to go to my recruiting center or call them to ask 1 or 2 simple questions.

Also, this site will not be "detriment" to this forum. Questions answered here will be linked on the site to the appropriate post.

For example:

Can I join the Forces with dental braces?

There are restrictions when joining the Forces while currently on an orthodontic treatment:

From the CFP 154 - Medical Standards:

The following conditions will result in deferral of enrollment until the condition is corrected:

the active phase of orthodontic treatment, if such treatment is required to treat an underlying functional disability/medical condition. If orthodontic treatment is not required to treat an underlying functional disability/medical condition, enrollment may proceed if the applicant signs the Statement of Understanding on orthodontic treatment which is found in the Recruiter's Handbook, Annex D to Chapter 2.

TREATMENT RESTRICTIONS

6. Orthodontics. Except for specifically identified cases, orthodontic treatment for service members will be limited to that which can be provided by the general practitioner dental officer with minimal specialist consultation and direction. Such cases should be initiated only when the treatment can be completed within a period to avoid problems created by cyclical military activity, eg, postings, extended courses or exercises.

To discuss this further, join the discussion thread: http://forums.army.ca/forums/threads/13318.15.html

For more information, read over the Medical Standards (CFP 154) Chapter 4: Dental Enrolment Standards and Dental Condition on Enrolment

I think it's a great idea...

Instead of having a forum, it could be a more user-friendly dictionary for potential recruits.

The site could be divided into sections for those "thinking about joining" "visiting the recruiters" "in the recruiting process" and "headed to bmq."

Each process always comes with different questions, such as what to wear to a swearing-in ceremony, to what to bring to bmq, etc.

Instead of having everything jumbled up into a "recruiting" forum like it is here, it could be organized better for those people who aren't used to the jargon and stuff (probably not a bad idea to have a dictionary on the site that explains the jargon too).

Is all this info already offered on army.ca and forces.ca? Yes, but it's all thrown together and hard to find (especially on here where recruiting stuff is only a small part of the site).

I think the site, and the recruiters, should support it. Should be made clear though to those visiting that it is an unofficial site.

Not sure if that's what you are talking about Noob but that's the picture I had in my head when I read what you were saying, anyway, think it's a great idea.

Yes that`s exactly what the site will be. And for sure I will make it very clear that it`s an unofficial forces website with the Forces and the Canadian government NOT associated with it.

I like the idea.

Would it be based on the Wiki idea?  An open source , which can be modified based on changes which reflect the CF?

Or do you plan on researching all information first, then publishing it, and changing as per your ongoing research?

It wont be open sourced because people can easily put wrong information. It will all be researched before it is posted.

People will be able to send me questions and the answer with references which I will review and if it`s appropriate, post it. The site will also continue to grow with new answers added.

I see,

Well it is a very large undertaking, and I hope you are prepared for the workload.  Make sure it does not lose the passion of being a hobby, and turning into a full time job......

I won't ask about funding for the server and such, and how you plan on maintaining that.

Good luck.

Haha thanks.

I'll be paying monthly for the hosting which is only $3.99/month.

I don't know why people are being so hard on you. Being in the recruitment process myself it would be nice to have another source to go to. I don't wanna be mean or anything, but some people on this site are very hypercritical. One second their talking of their own rights of opinion, but once someone use's there own they open their mouth for all the wrong reasons.

Mike

I would support your website; and use a banner.

So to elaborate.

You by yourself, with no official connection to the military, would like to start a site with the aim to educate potential new recruits.  You plan on doing this on your own, and using a public server costing $3.99 per month.

The goal is to redefine what the CF, and milnet.ca has offered to Potential Recruits, and to improve access of information to all people wishing to understand the selection process for the Military in Canada.

Have I captured the gist of your goals?
