Dutch tank crew still at the top

28 October 2021 | 09:56

Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States. A Dutch tank crew, deployed for the enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania, left them all behind. This happened during the international shooting competition Iron Spear in Latvia. With gold in their hands, the Dutch cavalrymen returned this week to Lithuania where they were deployed.

During the Iron Wolf certification exercise in Lithuania, some combat units travelled to Latvia for an international shooting competition. Here 44 teams from the 12 participating countries competed for a prize. There was one to be won in the category 'Main Battle Tank'. Here the tanks had to fire at static and moving targets during a challenging tactical scenario. The Netherlands scored the most points and won the first prize.

Second place for armoured infantry

The Netherlands has been participating in the eFP mission in Lithuania since 2017. After a long absence of the tank weapon within the Royal Netherlands Army, 43 Mechanised Brigade is bringing the Leopard 2A6 battle tank back to deployment territory. The fact that Dutch tankers immediately take first place in an international competition is a special achievement for that reason.

The Dutch armoured infantrymen also did well in the other category: 'Infantry Fighting Vehicle'. Here, the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle won silver. Only the Norwegians did slightly better.

Deterrent effect

The Dutch soldiers who took part in the shooting contests in Latvia are part of a multinational NATO unit within the Enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania. This unit has to show the Baltic States that NATO is there for them. It should also act as a deterrent to Russia, which is adopting an increasingly aggressive stance towards the alliance.
