infantry sashes

being ai a armoured cadet corps we do not use the sashes, they are a infantry tradition. Any way I am curious about where they ordginated(sp) from and what is the history. Why do WO+ wear a maroon sash and sgt‘s wear a red one? thanks alot

I‘ve been told they had something to do with being stretcher bearers and they would hook the ends of the stretcher into the sash for support.
