Houthi Red Sea Blockade

Why not park a few satellites over Yemen in a geosynchronous orbit and when someone launchs a drone follow them home and drop a cruise missile on them.

The production lines for lasers aren't open yet.

On the other hand there are a lot of autocannons in the 30 to 76mm range with production lines for their ammunition open.

Strapping a couple of these on board might make some friends -

Rumours abound that Canada still has some of those in storage (makes me wonder why 4GS has got their hands on them yet, if so).

Or these?

The GDF-005 was looked at for Gulf War 1 on the tanker, instead of the 40mm boffins. Unfortunately, they are not Marin ized and would not stay serviceable long in that environment.

The boffins are done. No parts/unsafe.

Geosynchronous weather satellites orbit at about 35,500km, low earth orbit satellites like Star Link orbit at around 500-600km.

Short answer (and the only true one) Jarnhamar: No.

Short explanation: to do geostationary, your satellite must orbit the earth once every 24 hours while at the same time go fast enough that it maintains orbit (as opposed to falling back to earth) On lower orbits, that combination is not available and the satellites would fall back in the atmosphere and disintegrate.

Think about a low orbit satellite that is world renown and in low earth orbit: The International Space Station. To maintain orbit, it has to go around the earth 16 times every day.

Better idea instead of dropping a Cruise missile. How about a tungsten carbide rod from orbit.
You want to put the fear of God in someone or at least the fear of you . This would do it.

Some say those already exist. 🤔

How about the newer Bofors 40mm L/70?

And you can't do geosynchronous close to earth?
No.

@Oldgateboatdriver gave a great explanation. Essentially geosynchronous orbits are great for weather satellites and other systems that work on a massive scale.

To get precise locations/imagery you need low earth orbiting satellites, and they make several laps around the planet a day. To maintain continuous coverage over a specific area you'd need a lot of satellites dedicated to that one task. It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be impractical.

Or like a very high flying plane or drone…

I had the absolute joy of watching one of those twin 35mm open up while defending an airfield from a mock air attack...and HOLY SHIT those things can spew some hate downrange

I had never seen a weapon that was rapid fire & each shot blasted put a shockwave that you'd see about a whole second or two before it hit you in the chest with a THUD!

THUD x like 60 just slamming into your chest & ears in a matter of a brief few moments!

...And the car alarms going off once the racket had died down 😅 they were like 2km away

Great childhood memory

Or, you know, bribe enough of the right people - in the right places - so your HUMINT network is remarkably effective ;)

Like a pointed stick? ;)
