I was reading Pierre Burton's Vimy this week and came across this passage,
In battle the emphasis is usually on the infantry; but at Vimy it was the gunners, stripped to the waist, sweating despite he wind and the sleet, labouring hour after hour without rest or let up, who were the real victors in the battle to seize the ridge.

Thank God the guns and whatnot.

P.S. Vimy gives some good insight into Andy McNaughton's development of modern artillery methods if anyone is interested.

Excellent begining for young readers, Vimy was one of the first documents on War that i have ever read, i recommend it highly to all and sundry. Pierre had a unique insight into the soul of this Country and i for one will mourn his passing.
