Feb long weekend for Ont.

It's easy to make a promise that doesn't cost the government anything. If the government was forced to pay companys for lost production or sales it wouldn't have made the promise. We are so far down the socialist road now that most people have no idea how damaging the government's arbitrary regulations can be to business.

Its such a shame Tory blew it wit the the faith based school thing, unfortunately, Klees, a big proponent of FBF, made it back in, funny though ya know, since Flaherty and Baird are in Ottawa, that leaves, well that leaves Frank Klees wide open for the leadership again. Frank has enjoyed a lot of the base that carried Bindy Stronach to office, septin me of course, now they have come up for air, we'll just hafta see what the hubub is. Politics.

Another point being made by people in the service industry - This "holiday" won't be a holiday for all.  Retail will probably still remain open - people "need" to shop with their families.  Restaurant workers, movie theatres, museums, rec centres, etc etc, will have to remain open, since people "need" these services to spend time with their families.  Most in the service industry are not looking forward to having to work on another holiday.

This promise is all smoke and mirrors.

Smoke, mirrors and according to some economists a hit of up to $2 billion dollars to the Ontario economy.

Well, we really didn't need that money anyway............. ::)

But if it's a statutory holiday then business has to pay extra to employ people on the day. Government workers will all get the day off and most private sector office workers whom the employer has to pay for no work done.

Just as the loonie will rarely be called a dollar coin, the new day is unlikely to be frequently called anything except Dalton Day.

Manitoba: it became an issue after the politicians learnt that Saskatchewan had already approved such a measure.
Manitoba just approved it (with school contests naming it) - Riel Day.

PS angry to learn Family Day is just a work day

February holiday doesn't apply to federal employees

A major union representing thousands of federal workers in Ottawa has been swamped by phone calls from members demanding to know why they won't be enjoying Ontario's recently announced Family Day holiday in February.

Ed Cashman, regional executive vice-president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), said calls began once re-elected Premier Dalton McGuinty confirmed his election promise of a new provincial statutory holiday.

"We're getting hundreds of phone calls in our office saying: 'hey, how come everybody else gets this and we don't'?" said Mr. Cashman.

"But people need to know that what the premier said doesn't necessarily apply to everyone in this province equally."

The holiday is scheduled to be celebrated on the third Monday of February, beginning on Feb. 18, 2008.

Mr. McGuinty announced the holiday as an opportunity for families to spend more quality time together.

"I can think of no better way for the government to get to work than to give the families a little more of what they value above all else -- time together," the premier said at a news conference last week.

But Mr. Cashman said many families in Ottawa will not be granted this time.

"If you work for the public service, you're not going to get the day off," he said.

"Ironically, the Family Day is not going to reunite families because one member of the couple might be having the day off and the other will not."

But a primary public service employer said Mr. Cashman's revelation is not news.

"We've been very clear about that ever since this was first announced," said Robert Makichuk, chief of media relations for the Treasury Board, which employs about 75,000 public servants in Ottawa.

"Federally, there are 11 designated paid holidays and despite the addition of a day off in February, our collective agreements do not provide for an additional day off," said Mr. Makichuk.

A spokesman from the provincial Ministry of Labour said federal employees are not under Mr. McGuinty's control.

"Since federal employees fall under federal jurisdiction, their public holidays are determined by the Canada Labour Code," said Bruce Skeaff. "Family Day is being introduced through the Ontario Employment Standards Act."

Mr. Cashman said he wants Family Day to "be inclusive and extend to as many workers as possible and not just be limited to workers of the Employment Standards Act."

"We would want Mr. McGuinty to reflect on the true intent of a family holiday and if he could exert any pressure on Prime Minister Harper, that would be a really great thing," said Mr. Cashman. "The people that are going to suffer the most are the people from Ottawa."

A spokesperson for Mr. McGuinty had no comment.

I'd be interested in a statistic - how many people are actually going to get this day off?  With the number of people who are Federal Gov't employees, and the numbers in the service industry who will have to work anyway (granted, at time and a half or whatever, but they're still working)...What kind of "family day" is this going to be?

Here's a thought - day cares will be closed (subject to Ontario Employment Standards Act).  All us Federal Gov't workers will have to take a day's leave, I guess...

Anyone know how the other provinces with a similar, non-standard holiday are dealing with this?

Huh? What do you base that upon?

Most of the federal and provincial Conservative keeners in the riding associations here went and worked for other Conservative riding associations during the election in which the Belindabot bought its "win". We wanted nothng to do with it, and held our noses while we voted Conservative despite its name being on the ballot.

Undoubtedly some truth to that, my support terminated when Bindy trucked in her employees and trumped Lois, but I know there was overlap, even between Brown, Stronach and Klees. Since the last realignment, im in PVLs riding but I keep in touch.
