Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released from house arrest on Friday as the sexual assault case against him moved one step closer to dismissal after prosecutors told a Manhattan judge that they had serious problems with the case.

I always despise the media fixation with personal scandal, over political analysis.

I doubt one Canadian in a 50 knew who Dominique Strauss Kahn was before his alleged sexual incident. I also suspect very few had ever seen the media do a serious analysis of his economic philosophy. Despite leading the powerful IMF, he emerges into public consciousness solely for his girl troubles.

Hence, I receive an almost perverse pleasure in seeing the charges collapse against him. Too bad, of course, that this media circus will merely be replaced by another.

It makes for a pretty disturbing read.
