Team Canada ended the 2005 World Junior Hockey Championship the same way they started it - by totally dominating their opponent.

Jeff Carter, Patrice Bergeron, Anthony Stewart and Dion Phaneuf broke open a close game with second period goals as Canada hammered Russia 6-1 to capture their first gold medal since 1997.

With Canada leading 2-1 after 20 minutes, Carter started the second-period barrage at 3:33, taking Andrew Ladd's bank pass off the boards deep in the Russian zone and firing a shot from a bad angle that fooled Anton Khudobin. The puck hit his arm and trickled into the net, making it 3-1 Canada.

The goal was the 12th of Carter's world junior career, tying Eric Lindros' Canadian record.

Khudobin was pulled right after and replaced by Andrei Kuznetsov, although the move changed little.

Bergeron made it 4-1 at 7:53, capping a brilliant three-way passing play which began when defenceman Phaneuf sent two Russians to the ice with a devastating hit in the Canadian zone.

Sidney Crosby then took a pass and broke in on Kuznetsov, who stopped his slapshot. The rebound went to Corey Perry, who sent a cross-ice pass to Bergeron for the easy tap in.

Just 1:01 later, Stewart tipped in Nigel Dawes' cross-ice pass for a 5-1 lead.

Phaneuf made it 6-1 on a power play with a blast from the point at 13:19.

After the puck went in, Dimitri Vorobiev cross-checked Dawes in the face and received a five-minute major and game misconduct.

Ryan Getzlaf and Danny Syvret scored in the first period for the Canadians, while Alexei Emelin scored for Russia.

Does anyone think that Russia might be interested in trading military equipment for some hockey players' contracts? :dontpanic:

Good idea. It'd be fun to have some new jets for NORAD patrols. Imagine a CAP of MiG-29s over Washington! ;D A few nukular subs could do, too, as long as we remember to translate the tags.

corey perry lives up the street from me here in peterborough. i'm hoping to get my picture taken with the medal  ;D ;D

Dug up this old thread especially for today . . . will "Oh Canada" be playing in Sweden in a couple of hours?  :cdn:

Bronze medal game just finished, 2-1 US over Sweden.  It was a tight game near the end, Sweden had a 5 on 3 advantage.  We'll see if the strange brew boys can bring it home.
