SANFORD, Fla. - A central Florida dealership trying to drum up business is offering an unusual perk for potential used-truck buyers _ a free AK-47 assault rifle.
General sales manager Nick Ginetta says that since the promotion was announced on Thursday, business has more than doubled at Nations Trucks in Sanford.
Customers would have to pass a background check before using the $400 gun shop voucher.
They also have the option of using the money toward other firearms, or they can request a cheque in that amount instead.
The dealership has fielded some complaints about the deal, which Ginetta acknowledges is controversial.
But, he adds: “My buyer is absolutely a gun owner, no question.”
The promotion runs through the end of November.

The title is mis-leading... you do not get an Ak-47 for $400... you get a voucher... can you even get an Ak-47 for $400?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that in the U.S. licensing of automatic weapons (e.g. AK-47s) is a Federal responsibility, not a state responsibility? I also understood that there was a lot of loops you had to jump through before you can buy one?

There are a lot of semi-automatics available. I see them in shops fairly frequently.

The US federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004, with criteria on ownership reverting back to the jurisdiction of individual states.

True, but if its only semi-automatic than its not really an "assault rifle."

I stand corrected.

The Clinton "Assault Weapons" Ban defined rifles as "assault weapons" based upon such things as magazine capacity, pistol grip, bayonet lug, and many other, often cosmetic, features. It had nothing whatsoever to do with assault rifles.

A semi-automatic AK was included in that ban as an "assault weapon". The only AKs that could be manufactured/imported for sale after the ban came into effect had to have thumbhole stocks instead of pistol grips, could not have bayonet lugs or flash eliminators/suppressors etcetera. The numpties who wrote this, cousins of the numpties who wrote our firearms legislation, did not care that these features did not affect the function of the firearms at all. It was all based upon looks.

Pre-existing firearms and magazines were still legal, but post-ban magazines were limited to ten rounds max. That is why our C7/C8 have "For Export Only" stamped in them - they were made in the US during the ban.
