Something to think about while we are comfy, in warm houses...

While sitting here, I realized the Battle of the Bulge was starting/ocurring this time some 60 years ago. For those who dont know the battle in the "Ardennes" was the biggest battle America fought in the war, involving some 300,000 young Americans. It all started out when Hitler launched a surprise attack in the thinly held woods in Belgium, called the Ardennes Forest. Elements of the 1st and 29th Infantry divisions were quickly pushed back by the large amounts of German armour and crack Infantry that led the attack. American, British and Canadian paratroopers were called upon to get into the Ardennes quickly to establish a perimeter. Freezing temperatures, constant snow and fog made air supply impossible. One of the most famous stories of the Battle of the Bulge is one of the 101st Airborne, and the small town of Bastonge. After getting into Bastonge the Americans were shelled constantly and faced many attacks. Fortunately the Americans held on, and eventually Patton broke through the German lines to "rescue" the 101st.
