Has anyone here had any experience as an assault pioneer? It seems like an interesting trade, and Id like some opinions (preferably non-biased :p ) about it.

It was not a trade. It was a specialist job that an infantryman could be trained to do.

The assault pioneers and mortar platoons were disbanded last year as part of someones master plan that yet to be explained to the troops. Engineers and artillerymen will fill the requirements formerly detailed to the infantry, allowing the infantry units to fill the ranks of their depleted rifle companies.

So when your on patrol in no-where‘s-ville and notice your in a mine field or may have triped a MRUD you can now what untold number of hours for someone to get a hold of Division or Brigade to send down some Engineers to get you out as oppossed to calling down to the platoon or company and having some guys help out in a quicker fashion. Or how about being told that no artillery assests are available at the moment and to hold off the enemy as best you can vs calling up Mortar platoon that is close by and in immediate support.
The descion to get rid of pioneers and mortars (and possibly TOW now) will definately cost many lives and I just hope I‘m not one of them.
Please excuse all spelling errors.

Oh. I was told the course still existed (forgive my lack of knowledge about this.).

CFL, that is not the case at all. Battle Groups deploying overseas will have assets assigned to them according to the mission and based on an estimate of the situation.

The army will use a "building block" method, centred around an infantry or armoured regiment, in order to deploy the Battle Group overseas. The Infantry Battle Group may be provided engineers (up to and including armoured engineer assets as well as heavy equipment), armoured recconaissance, armoured (tanks until we get Stryker), artillery (gun, mortar, air defence), etc. In addition, we can also superimpose Reserve elements on the Battle Group in order to provide stratigic flexibility within the army.

No "lives have been put on the line" and you are quite safe to deploy overseas with a Battalion. If you step on a mine or are caught in a minefield, engineer assets will get to you just as quick as the old pioneers did and they probably have better equipment and better training to handle the situation.

Cheers,

CFL, I noticed you are with 2 PPCLI. In the last couple of years, you probably deployed on Roto 7 or Roto 12 on Op PALLADIUM or on Roto 0 to Op APOLLO. Who provided the assault pioneers during these deployments to mine heavy areas?

They are still running the advanced pioneer crse.

Gunner it is late so I will re read your post tomorrow in order to provide a coherent thought.

I have heard that 3VP still has these and also that other units hide them (ie drumline) but not being from them I don‘t know for sure.

Gunner I am going with the thinking that my BN is in the **** (ie war) and assests are going to be few and far between. Just because we haven‘t been in a WW for some time doesn‘t mean we can go without these units. I was also not speaking on the engineers capabilities to get us out of sticky situations, only that there is a huge possiblity that engineers will be tied up elsewhere or take a lot longer to get to the problem area then say a section of pioneers.
Bosnia is not really a fare example considering we have been there for over ten years with minimal hostilites that would diverte engineers elsewhere. To answer your question though it was the engineers who where attached to us during my tour in Bosnia (and probably Afganistan as well).

CFL,
If replacing Pioneers is not an option, how do you think we should fill the capability gap?
