Message from Commander RCAF and RCAF Chief Warrant Officer on the One-Year Anniversary of the Air Operations Support Technician Occupation

The first Reserve-only occupation in the Royal Canadian Air Force marks its first official anniversary on 30 June, 2020. Congratulations to all our Air Operations Support Technicians! What began as a dream four years ago has become a viable innovation for Canada's Air Force. Today we have AOS Techs at 8 Wing Trenton in Ontario and at 19 Wing Comox in British Columbia, and we are extremely pleased to announce that we have now opened the doors to accept AOS Techs at nearly all of our wings and squadrons across Canada.

Lieutenant-General A.D. Meinzinger & Chief Warrant Officer J.R.D. Gaudreault
Commander RCAF & RCAF Chief Warrant Officer

Cpl. Ashley Cameron gives us a peak into the world of an Air Operations Support Technician. The RCAF created this Reserve-only occupation a year ago and Cpl. Cameron describes her responsibilities at the RCAF’s busiest base, 8 Wing Trenton.

I was surprised to see her wearing a Log branch cap badge in the video... Seems strange that they don't wear Air Ops, given that it is an Air Ops trade.

They may not have sorted out the hat badge issue yet.

CFB Baden summer 1981 we had RCAF reservists coming over to do the same work as laid out in the video. Maybe that's where the idea came from.

So who was doing the marshalling, aircraft starts and WASF before, the technicians?

Yes, the reg force ground crew. It's a long time ago, can't really recall why the reserves where there. Summertime employment? The reserves I met were from the Montreal area.

WASF is anybody on the Wing they can tag with it... I was the 8 OSS WASF co-ord for a while, despite having no pers actually on WASF.

Know if 443 is looking at AOS Techs? I'm starting to think about retirement options...

I am not sure what the 12 Wing allocation of AOS techs are. You can call the ARAF and ask about post-reg force employment. Usually, almost any Reg F occupation can be accommodated. Even weathermen!

There were 8 OSS pers on the WASF, it's just that none of them worked for me directly. So I had to bed for people from other sections, all of whom had bosses of a higher rank. While none were rude, there was a strong "who TF are you?" vibe lol.
