Meet Ian Douglas - Capt of the Seastar - He`s making his way via sail from Vancouver Island - OZ - Suez - Paris - and ultimately headed back to BC. Currently he`s landlocked in Paris France.
Ian`s Great grandfather was a Gurhka Full Col and a LCol in the Cdn Expeditionary Force in WW1. He raised the 54th Bn and took it through the trenchs at St Eloi south of Ypres, Desire Trench near Courcellette on the Somme Battlefield and Vimy Ridge. On 1 Mar 1917 he died in a frontal assault on the German posns a few hundred yards west of the current day monument.
Last week Ian went to visit the site where his Great Grandfather fell facing thew enemy 89 years ago. There are good shots of the monument which is currently shrouded in renovations.
