The General Hillier Years. The Merged Superthread

That's a petition I would gladly sign - if I could, considering that I ceased being an Army reservist over 25 years ago. I have a huge, huge amount of respect for General Hillier. Simply because he has been a tireless and fearless advocate for the military in general and the troops he commands...

Keeping wounded in CF - merged super-thread

Holy shit, that sounds just like my ex-wife! She spent 17 years in the service while I did not (two years' Reserve service is all I can cop to).

    Fallout Shelters

An uncle of mine was posted to Borden twice in his military career. When I was a kid he told me once he had to go into the bunker a few times and stay there for a couple days as part of an exercise. It was chilling, though, to hear that my aunt and cousins would not be able to accompany him in...

No need for new military units, says Hillier

The idea of territorial defence battalions sounds good from a conceptual standpoint. However, isn't this issue already dealt with through the creation of 31 Canadian Brigade, et al.? Nominally, these Reserve brigade groups already have a number of regular force members attached (usually as RSS)...

    CANADA DAY

The Ruxted article closes with a sombre warning that all Canadians would do well to heed: "It's really simple, you see.  If you want a useful military then you need to pay for it.  If you don't want to pay for it then you do not deserve it.  You'll know the price when, not if, the enemy comes...

LAV III Mobile Gun System (MGS)

<remainder snipped for brevity's sake> Good rebuttal, CSA 105. The MGS is an interesting concept in theoretical terms. Without belabouring the issue of its many deficiencies, let me say this: the MGS has always struck me as a solution in search of a problem which does not exist. It's really...

Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Gets It Wrong - Tanks are Right for Afghanistan

I can't resist, so I'm going to take a crack at picking apart Wallace's essay. I may end up stating the obvious in a few places, so if I'm outta my lane, tell me. First Wallace says, "The rationale for this abrupt reversal was the vulnerability of Canadian light armoured vehicles to insurgency...

Why doesn't Canada design its own AFV and its own aircraft?

The Ram had potential, but it was limited by an inability to accommodate anything larger than a six-pounder (ca. 57mm) gun. When first introduced, the 6pdr was capable of taking out most of the early German tanks. Then the Panzer IV and Tiger came out and the Ram was instantly and hopelessly...

Why doesn't Canada design its own AFV and its own aircraft?

Sweden has always adhered to a policy of more or less absolute neutrality, which at one time meant it needed to support an indigenous defence industry. For a small country like Sweden, it was very capable but quite expensive, probably partly accounting for the high taxation rates...

Canada's purchase of the Leopard 2 MBT

I was watching a TV news show last night and Peter Churra of A-Channel News from London, Ontario was interviewing someone on Parliament Hill. At one point during the interview, Churra criticized the recent Leopard purchase, arguing that it would give the opposition in the House the ability to...

Canada's purchase of the Leopard 2 MBT

This is great news! And long, long, long overdue. For a long time I was beginning to wonder if the army was actually going to get any new 'cats' - you know how on-again, off-again governments (particularly those of the Liberal persuasion) can be when it comes to big military procurements. Did...

British sailors arrested at gunpoint by Iranian navy.

Good question, and one which isn't hard to answer. The Iranians would definitely threaten to use their nukes if the US and other countries didn't withdraw their forces from the Middle East (Afghanistan included). I get the feeling that Ahmadinejad sees himself as a Messiah of sorts - a saviour...

British sailors arrested at gunpoint by Iranian navy.

What an excellent and incisive analysis of the situation. Thanks for bringing the article to our attention, tomahawk6. Hanson is right about (the British ROE being de-escalatory in nature) - they have no other choice simply because they lack the military power needed to prosecute the action...

Extreme heat in army tanks endangers troops; forces use tank blanket to keep troops from baking

My best guess (and it could be a really wild-assed guess and totally wrong) is that the C2's might get relegated to the training establishments. That is,  for as long as they remain functional and do not require extensive maintenance regimens to keep them erviceable. That's a big 'if' because...

Extreme heat in army tanks endangers troops; forces use tank blanket to keep troops from baking

I doubt the Leo purchase is a rumour. Remember that the media first brought this story to light a month ago when government officials were supposedly sniffing around a possible tank deal with Germany, a deal which was promptly denied by the government. Now we're seeing the same story again...

Jack Granatstein on Canadians and our military: "Squishy"

"Preachy squishiness" - I can't think of a better way to describe the Canadian polity. Mr. Granatstein has excerpts from his book published in today's National Post - the excerpt is a fictional accounting of how Canada would be entirely unable to deal with a major earthquake devastating...

Name This Photo!!! - The AFV Recognition Thread

The picture attached to your post looks one of the RG-series armoured vehicles made by Reumech of South Africa - and damned if I can't remember the proper model number or designation. I just know I've seen it before. Does that count?  :D

Name This Photo!!! - The AFV Recognition Thread

Here's one for ya - I just discovered this one. I had to obscure some text painted on the right front of the vehicle to avoid throwing out a give-away. Any takers?

Name This Photo!!! - The AFV Recognition Thread

Actually, it looks like a Steyr-built Pandur 6 X 6. The turret is the giveaway. The Pandur hull itself seems to be your garden-variety MOWAG design with a few fillips here and there in the way the hull is shaped (maybe to hide the close family resemblance??)

Wondering what BASIC TRAINING is like? Watch the video. (BASIC UP)

Too funny. I'm practically pissing myself laughing. I wonder (not that I really care, just wondering) how our freakin' PO feels about having his mug plastered all over army.ca - maybe two inches tall about now? Or maybe not. Thanks for a good laugh. "Do your pushups, duMont!"
