NDP Abandons Ship

I am hoping a bunch of Liberals will make the "Its time to move on.." decision. I think new LPC candidates (and NDP ones too) will have less chance of getting elected.

Watch for that come the fall.
Wouldn't it be nice if their departure plans could result in a revival of their consciences and their turning against their liberal bedmates. (I can dream)

I wonder how much longer it will be before the LPC caucus also rolls over on the Cabinet and it's fearless leader.

I think if that had happened about a year ago, the LPC stood a decent chance of re-election in 2025. I guess it is too late now as they each individually own the current state.
My thoughts exactly. There was a chance to clear out the dead wood and rise from the ashes a bit. Now its too late to introduce new faces and rebrand.

I wonder if we will see Trudeau step aside in the 11th hour to let Christina Freeland (assuming she wins the leadership election) fall on his sword Kim Campbell style?
No - I think she is smarter than that.

You mean Gerald Butts? ;)

Affiliation aside, I get the impression Angus has been a solid constituency guy ...
For sure - not afraid to be the squeakiest of wheels when needed.

And yes, Angus & Carole Hughes (also in the seat for +15 years) GTFO shows some significant team players jumping ship. Wonder if it's because they're 1) truly needing a break, 2) not happy with Team Orange's coach, 3) not happy with the prospect of a Red-Orange merger down the road, and/or 4) seeing some writing on the wall re: private sector union members getting a bit Bluer? Or maybe a bit of all of the above?

In Hughes' case, I understand her riding's going to disappear, with bits being added to other neighbouring ridings, so that might be a factor, too.

Even at the political staff level, I've heard Team Orange people actually work better with Team Blue members than Red. Fewer worries about cutting one's grass, I guess ...

The title says it all - NDP jumping ship. Will they be socialist pirates? Arrrrrr

I don’t think it is self evident that, if the Liberals and NDP merge, they automatically aggregate their current support. People identify with Political Parties for lots of reasons. A merger could just as easily drive a lot of current supporters away from a new party that they don’t recognize.

Of course we will never know that. Trying to service a riding like his would be wearing. Not only is it large, a lot of it is only accessible by air.

Are there actually any old unionists left? I grew up with David Christopherson as our local MP; he was a high school drop out that ended up from a blue collar job, to the UAW, to city council then eventually an MP. Really smart, hard working and decent guy that I would vote for (regardless of party affiliation).

Don't live in Hamilton anymore, but the last NDP candidate where I live now was some kind of career student that specialized in some kind of gender identity studies esoteric niche and had a platform that ignored things like jobs, cost of living etc and instead focused on some fairly niche identity politics (even for the NDP). The Liberals could have won with a sprouting potato as a candidate.
