There was a technology demonstration at SOFIC in March this year.
Fairly impractical at this point militarily as the user needs their hands to control the jets.

Unlike motorcycles and parachutes ...

If nothing else I can see having a hoverboard or jet pack or two on hand in stores with the rubber dinghies. An alternative to having to swim a line across a river and anchor it. Or, as noted, just a faster way to get to the top of a mountain.
