Australian navy's hunt for new sub to replace Collins class

It is not 3 Subs.
It's 3 Virginian Class SSN with an option for 2 more, PLUS 5 SSN-AUKUS, eventually working out to 8 of the AUKUS Class SSN and the Virginia's retired (or sold to someone else who likes older Subs, maybe in 2060 it will be Canada...)
From the afterlife I'm going to find a way to super necropost this as it probably comes to fruition ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Still a heavy sticker shock to the Sustrakiaj taxpayer, no doubt
Yes autocorrect (that literally just took the correctly spelled word of autocorrect & turned it into autocracy...)

Clearly when my fat fingers typed Austrralia, what I really meant to say was Sustrakiaj...ffs...

Here's something else you'll never see in Canada
- Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the Coalition would support the submarine deal "come hell or high water".-
I think it's more self-serving than having a united front on Defence.

AUKUS was announced on 15 Sep 2021, and the latest Australian election (where the two main parties switched) was in May 2022. Peter Dutton was the Defence Minister until the 2022 election, then became Opposition Leader.

So, when AUKUS was signed, he was Defence Minister. Not saying that folks don't do a 180 when the other party wins, but there would be no shortage of memes if he didn't maintain support for AUKUS, regardless whether his party formed govt or not.

Also, Australia canโ€™t ride American coattails near as good as Canada since theyโ€™re closer to China than the US.

HAHAHHAHA surely you jest....Canada with NUCLEAR submarines??? NBL - Not Bloody Likely
Well, the alternative to nuclear is the even more evil diesel fuel โ€” and Canada, unlike Australia, already has a domestic nuclear power industry and wouldnโ€™t be starting entirely from scratch.

Nuclear power is the future โ€” itโ€™s a pity not everyone sees it that way.

Australia has had an ongoing nuclear reactor program since the 1950s, though, focussed on "research" and production of isotopes for medical and industrial usage. Sure, that is a very different scenario to submarine propulsion, but then so is electricity production for homes and industry.

Tensions among the three partners have also surfaced in recent days.

Both the UK and Australia have questioned bureaucratic hurdles put in place by Washington, which appear to have hindered the sharing of technology by the US.

Admr Sir Ben Key, the First Sea Lord, raised concerns at a conference hosted by a Washington-based think tank over regulations that govern the transfer of US technology to international partners.

Sir Ben said: โ€œWe have to be very careful as to what it is that you want your rules environment to achieve.

โ€œIf your rules environment is to prevent your adversaries from getting it and seeing what it is, thatโ€™s probably realistic.

โ€œIf your rules environment is to allow you a competitive edge in a different way, then I would question whether thatโ€™s really enabling what matters to us all, which is to try and ensure a security framework.โ€

An ongoing problem with the US.

Not just the arsenal of democracy but democracy's arsenal. Other folks would like a shot at some of the jobs as well.

But the good news for commodity producing countries like Canada is that many countries - like Germany - are returning, ironically, to coal power! ;)

Energy crisis fuels coal comeback in Germany

Coal has made a comeback in Germany this year, as Europe's largest economy turns to the dirty fuel to power it through an energy crisis.

More than a third (36.3%) of the electricity fed into the German power grids between July and September came from coal-fired power plants, compared with 31.9 percent in the third quarter of 2021, according to German statistics office Destatis.

Long demonised by Germany's Green party, which leads some of the government's top ministries, coal was set to be phased out by 2030, but Russia's war with Ukraine and gas export curbs, brought coal back into favour.

It is really too bad that trudeau and company won't let us sell thermal coal anymore.
do we even have the docks and loading facilities available anymore? If they have been taken out, you would never get the construction request through the review process

BC still exports some....

Coal mining is a major industry in British Columbia. Coal production employs thousands of people and coal sales generate billions of dollars in annual revenue. Coal production currently represents over half of the total mineral production revenues in the province.

Over 95 per cent of coal currently produced in BC is metallurgical coal, which is used in the production of steel from iron ore. The province also produces some thermal coal. Most BC coal is exported internationally via coal ports on the west coast near Vancouver and Prince Rupert. A smaller percentage is sent by rail to steel mills in eastern Canada.

I thought somebody better tie this thread back together....

It appears I was mistaken, Justin said no more exports of thermal coal after 2030.

Now back to our regularly scheduled submarine replacement discussion. I was going to reference the K class submarines and coal but it appears even they were powered by oil. :)
