The Royal Canadian Air Force was called in when a B.C. woman found a First World War explosive shell — still live — while clearing out her house.

Still live at almost 100 years old.  Wow.

They safely destroyed the shell and defused the situation.
Anyone got any corn?

That was good it didn't go off, could have meant for an "explosive" holiday season  :p

In the story it is described as a 37mm. That indicates a projectile weight of about two pounds as the 40mm LAA weighed about two pounds.

For example - 6-pdr anti-tank was 57mm, 18-pdr field and 17-pdr anti-tank were both about 75mm and 25-pdr field was about 88mm.

They are still ploughing up unexploded ordinance in battle fields of world war one and there are still unexploded sap charges as well.

yes it is wikipedia ...

Didn't know there were still gas shells as well ...

You would be surprised at how often stuff like that happens. A number of years ago when i worked at the Dive unit in Shearwater, our EOD team received a call about an explosive at someones house. It turned out to be an old hand granade. It was sitting on this old guys mantle for years and years. He had grandkids and stuff in his house all the time. As well when they were dredging out Bedford basin around 1999 or 2000 they pulled up a 500 lb bomb whose outer casing had rested competly away. All that was left was the explosive. They had to ship that one to Gagetown because there is no where in NS to detonate anything that large. The diving units on both coasts get calls like this on a regular basis. Amazing when you think what people keep as a "souvenir"
