P51 suffered from hits to it's radiator in the CAS role. It really was meant as a long range high altitude fighter. Part of the problem for the USAF was they quickly rationalised their fighter force after the war and mainly stuck with the P51 as they were not interested in CAS, but in the fighter role. so that is what they mainly had in reserve.

No mention of the A-1 Skyraider that entered service in around 1950 and served with the US military, RAF, French Air Force, South Vietnamese Air Force, among others. It was used by the USN/USMC in the Korean War and both the USAF and USN during the Vietnam war. Last A-1 was retired in 1985 (Gabon Air Force).
