I'm a Sergeant in the NC Army National Guard (Army Reserves, but augmented at a state level, still federal Soldiers... yeah, it's confusing), specifically a Team Chief for a COLT Team... Combat Observation and Lasing Team (back when lasers were used to guide missles or artillery onto a target). Somewhat of scouts you could say.
Anyhow I figured I'd say hello to my brothers from the north.
I don't know if I'm really picking up how ya'll's rank structure works. So I'll trade information with you:
We have an MOS (job code) of 13-Foxtrot. Our ranks proceed from Private, Private First Class and Specialist (regular soldiers), to several different levels of Sergeants (NCOs). Most in our job field of foward observing and calling/adjusting indirect fire are enlisted. In fact, although most Company level teams are supposed to have a Lieutenant... we are always short of the brass (thank God!) and normally have a real Soldier (normally a Staff Sergeant) to do the fire planning and coordination.
Private-Specialist are either radio operators or drivers. Sergeants go out with a radio operator and infantry platoon, or in rare cases get their own COLT team (a Brigade asset), Staff Sergeants coordinate fire support at a Company level, and Sergeants First Class coordinate/adjust at a Batallion level.
We've gotten some cool new stuff recently, from GPS guided artillery pieces to smaller and better rangefinders and such.
I'd love to hear about ya'll's (you guy's) job and trade!
Down here we are referred to as FISTers... and we are known to be rough and have the sickest sense of humor of all. We are red-headed stepchildren of Infantry and Artillery both... But it's the best damn job in the Army. A sniper with a 155mm rifle that can kill anything >
I'll search this section to get more info but wanted to say hi and see if ya'll had any questions for me. Or stories! Nothing like calling for fire to have the rounds impact behind you... or calling in on some 'shrubs and bushes' to have them move... and end up being sheep!!! Oh well, saved them from some hadji violating them when he got horny.
