Hi!

I'm a 4th year Uni student in Edmonton, I'm graduating with a (pretty useless) B.A this December, but until then I'm looking for a job to pay the bills and hopefully to save up money for tuition this summer. I'm very interested in joining the CAF for various reasons, but I don't know if joining as a PT reserve or FT regular would be a better option for me based on my circumstances. I have several questions and I'd be very grateful if someone can answer them!

1) What are the future commitments as a reserve or regular? There's a likelihood that I may live in a foreign country in the future due to my fiancee being a Brazilian national. Will I be called back to Canada to serve in times of war?

2) What are the hours like for a reserve vs. a regular?

3) What are the advancement opportunity for someone with a B.A in the reserve vs. a regular?

4) Would it be possible for me to serve as a reserve/regular from May to late July in the summer? As I have to leave the country in early August and go back to school part time in September.

5) And finally, not to be stingy but as a student with no families here to help pay the bills and tuition, money is pretty important. What are the starting wages like for a reserve vs. regular?

Thank you so much for your help.

Thank you for your interest in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).  There are many opportunities in the CAF.

Service in the CAF offers valuable job skills, exciting challenges and unlimited career possibilities.  With more than 100 occupations the CAF invests in its personnel by giving them the training & education required to do their demanding jobs to the best of their abilities.  As a result, Canadian soldiers, sailors & air personnel are world-famous for their professionalism and expertise.

The CAF has more than 20 entry programs, some of which include subsidized education.  Candidates with education levels ranging from Grade 10 or Secondary IV to a university degree are encouraged to apply.

A great place to start looking into a career in the CAF is by looking at our website; you will find the answers to many questions.  You may wish to first consider whether you want to work full (Regular Force) or part-time (Reserves).

Another way to start is by thinking about which element (Army, Navy or Air Force) you see yourself working in.  Once you have decided which element suits you then start looking at the available occupations in that element.

Perhaps you’d rather work part-time with the CAF.  We have many part-time jobs available in the Reserves.  You can view a list of Reserve units in your area at:

If you wish to join you can visit your local CAF recruiting centre or you can apply online at:
