Ukraine - Superthread

I fully expect this battle and the defense of Mariupol to be taught at the infantry school, RMC and to senior leadership in the coming years. This war has rewrote what we thought modern warfare would be

Well, if we are to (re) learn anything from this war, it's that it seems alot like WW1.

You mean the blending of old tactics with new technology; where the successful army is the one that adjusts the former to embrace the latter?

Very un-Canadian way of thinking. We usually have a few thousand casualties before we take out the pen and paper and go back to the drawing board....

British intelligence now estimates 175k-200k Russian casualties including upto 60k dead.

If that isn't Biden saying "Russian warship, go fuck yourself!" I don't know what it's...
Apparently a lot more stuff being dug out of NATO too from the meeting this weekend.

Brits sending Storm Shadow with a 250km range. Apparently as well a commitment for ~700 tanks and ~1300 IFV plus Arty and more AD assets.
I suspect that tank number included 275 ish T-72 being sent from Poland and other former WP NATO members, and the French Armored Cars, plus the ~100 Leo 1’s, but that then leaves around 225 for Modern NATO MBT’s

I assume that’s a 250km open source range? Either way it’s already close to what’s needed to hit the bridge from the current front lines. This might make a low level penetration raid by tactical aircraft feasible for taking the bridge out. Risky, but worth it. Bet we see Russia air defence in Zaporizhia and Kherson getting the shit shaped out of it.

The family of missiles includes the MBDA Apache, Storm Shadow, SCALP and SCALP Naval.

Most of them quote a range of >250 km. But the SCALP Naval, with a vertical launch booster, has a range of 1400 km....

Bact to the question of how do you get it into the air before you have to start relying on its own motor.

The Daily Kos has a nice collection of videos/pictures of the visit. Apparently (unconfirmed) President Biden went in by train and that Russia was informed of the visit just prior to the visit.
It’s OS now that State told Russia POTUS was going in.
Just in case there was ‘an accident’ the notice was given so when Russia evaporated they knew why.

Yes

Snicker snicker :ROFLMAO:
I’m curious how susceptible they are to interception. My understanding is they cruise in low and finish with a pop-up? I have to imagine the AD around the bridge will be pretty unreal, and they’ll have whatever their best kit is to defend against that. Unless Ukraine pulls off something spectacular, and missile strike likely would not enjoy any SEAD assistance.

Could well be they’ll use these initially to thin out deeper logistics nodes and force Russia to disperse its air defence to cover many more sites. As effective strike range increases linearly, area that needs to be defended increases disproportionately more, the way a slice of pizza widens as you get further from the center. Russia can only have so much kit that’s useful to shoot these down.
