TV show "Sea patrol"

Saw this on the TV yesterday, reminds me of a aussie navy version of the "The Guard" All the deck officers are good looking, getting into various things that are far more exciting than the real life version. Very causal deck/bridge discipline. The patrol boat is pretty nice to look at. Any of our Aussies like to comment on how the navy views this show and how do the boats performed in real life?

They were still in service when the first season was filmed... the ship is replaced by an Armidale class boat season 2. They also upgrade to the new uniforms at some point as well.

If it's anything like "The Guard", based on my own experiences, we're being lied to about the quantity of good looking sailors...

Had they worded the request as "Implanted personal floatation devices" or "IPFD" then it would have gone through without a hitch.

Very causal deck/bridge discipline.

Very typical of small boats and patrol crafts. There is no breakdown in discipline (Though in at least one show, the RO takes a little too much liberty in his attitude towards the XO) but the distance between the Captain and lowliest seaman is much shorter in a crew of 25 to 30. It makes for more frequent and direct contact and conversations and ultimately, the discipline is maintained by the trust in the leaders that then develops directly, but the leaders need to be on the ball all the time to retain that trust.

I have worked on hovercraft (3 crew, Captian, first Officer and me the rescue gopher) and 100' cutters (11 crew) I know what you mean, but still I found it odd considering it's supposed to be a naval vessel, which is more formal than CG.

We watch Sea Patrol for a laugh sometimes. There was an episode somewhere along the line where a bloke hit a guy with a single shot from a deck mounted 12.7mm while the baddie was holding someone hostage. Hilarious stuff. No base in realism at all.

Not a fair criticism at all.  Although they take a fair bit of licence with some of the action stuff, I would say the program is actually pretty accurate in its description of life in minor war vessels
