Why Soldier On?

Following World War II, the traditional methods of rehabilitation
were no longer sufficient for the medical and psychological needs of
injured soldiers. In 1944, upon the request of the British Government, Dr.
Ludwig Guttmann, a neurologist and brain surgeon from Germany, created a
Centre for spinal injuries at the Stoke Mandeville hospital in Great
Britain. It was at this hospital where Guttmann introduced sport as a
form of recreation and aid to rehabilitation. Over time, sport for
persons with a disability became increasingly popular giving birth to the
Paralympic Games in 1960. Soldier On brings us back to the roots of our
existence.

The program is aimed to introduce Canadian Forces with a physical
disability to the exciting world of Paralympic sport. It is uniquely
designed to inspire soldiers to look beyond their injury, to Soldier On
towards living life to its fullest. It provides injured soldiers with,
  * an opportunity to socialize, share common interests, make new
friends, and open doors to other opportunities in life;
  easier transition to reintegration in their community and
independency;
*   access to a network of peers with a disability; and
*   a vehicle to continue to be physically active for life.

The Canadian Paralympic Committee is working closely with the
Department of National Defence, and the two parties organized the inaugural
Soldier On Paralympic Sport Summit at Carleton University in Ottawa,
Ontario, from May 25th to 27th, 2007. This two-day event allowed about a
dozen injured soldiers to try some Paralympic sports, such as athletics,
sitting volleyball, sledge hockey, table tennis, wheelchair basketball
and many others. (photos here in thumbnails)

donner de nouvelles perspectives dans la vie;
*   la possibilité d ' opérer une transition en douceur, de
réintégrer leur place dans la collectivité et de retrouver leur autonomie;
*   l ' accès à un réseau de pairs ayant un handicap;
*   un moyen de continuer d ' être actifs sur le plan physique pour
