So I finally got around to buying the proper sword knot for my sabre from the RCD kit shop, and they sent me two of them - a gold knot (the proper officer's knot) and a silver knot.

I've asked a few people what the silver knot is for, but nobody has come up with a definitive answer.

So far, ideas are:

- it's an NCO knot, for use in colour party guards

- it's a knot intended for wear with white mess kit

Anybody know for sure? Got a reference?

If you follow the same rules as for wearing Aiguillettes, then you wear the Gold for Ceremonial and Silver or any other colour (ie. Brown leather) for Non-ceremonial functions.

(This is all that I could find in A-AD-265-000/AG-001 CF Dress Instructions  APPENDIX 1, ANNEX G, CHAPTER 3)

Just getting back to this; when I picked up my sword, I was told that the Silver one was the NCM one.

That may just be a Regimental thing though.

Why do you need a sword George? You're just going to end up getting drunk and hurting yourself with it ;D
